The Countdown Begins: The Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon & 5K Presented by NYC Ferry Quickly Approaches

Greenway enthusiasts and athletes from Brooklyn and around the world will begin making their way towards the Columbia Street Waterfront District where the Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon & 5K takes place. On Sunday, October 6, join 1,500 runners as they will take on the Brooklyn Greenway for one of the most breathtaking and adventurous half marathons and 5Ks.

Since 2012, competitive and recreational runners have participated in the Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon & 5K. “Views of the Manhattan skyline and historic bridges, and the dash through the Brooklyn Navy Yard, are surely the most scenic parts of this incredible half marathon, yet, when talking to runners, they equally highlight the role this event plays in supporting BGI’s work to connect a greener, stronger, healthier Brooklyn,” said Terri Carta, BGI Executive Director.

This is one of many annual events organized by BGI that aim to increase awareness and generate support for the continued development and completion of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a 26-mile landscaped protected route for pedestrians, runners, and cyclists which will connect neighborhood parks and open space from Greenpoint to East New York.

The Greenway serves the broadest range of commuting and recreational users, including some of the most vulnerable, such as families with young children, people learning to ride a bike, older adults out for a stroll, and people with disabilities who use adaptive bicycles or other means to maintaining an active lifestyle. “The Greenway is a vital amenity for communities throughout Brooklyn,” Carta said.

NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower is the Presenting Sponsor of the 2019 Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon & 5K. “Hornblower is proud to support Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and their tireless work to promote our vibrant waterfront. Providing riders with a greenway to create those key first and last mile connections is essential in encouraging New Yorkers to consider resilient public transportation and promote a greener city,” said Cameron Clark, SVP for NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower. “We’re looking forward to an amazing day celebrating all of the participants and this great organization.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome NYC Ferry as our Presenting Sponsor of the 2019 Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon & 5K,” Carta said. “We share goals of increased mobility, access, and connectivity in waterfront communities, and we look forward to continued partnership in giving New Yorkers alternative transportation options.”

The 2019 race is additionally sponsored by Con Edison, Stevia in the Raw, Greenpoint Landing, and Kiwi Energy.

A race for all runners, the Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon & 5K is the ultimate urban tour of the Brooklyn Waterfront as the route that journeys along the Brooklyn Greenway from Red Hook to Greenpoint and back. Three distances are available: the 13.1-mile half-marathon, the 3.1-mile 5K, and new this year are the ‘Greenway Replay’ 5K and Half Marathon Combo. Runners should expect captive mid-run photos, local encouragement, refreshments, and a lively finish line festival.

Starting line is on 168 Columbia St. Brooklyn, NY 11231. The 5K starts at 8:30 AM and Half Marathon starts at 9:35 AM. Registration is still open at brooklyngreenway.org, but prices increase on September 21, so you should sign up today!
