The People’s Budget

Participatory Budgeting 2-22 in City Council District 34

NYC District 34 Freshman Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez continues her predecessor’s tradition of allocating a million dollars of city funds to the people’s vote.  District 34 covers the Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods of Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Ridgewood. You can vote if you are: 1) a resident in NYC Council District 34 and 2) age 11 or older.  You can be a non-citizen or citizen, regardless of your voter registration or immigration status. The six projects are up for grabs. You can select at least 2 and up to 4 projects.  More info here.  Vote online here.

1) $600,000 for COOPER PARK ADULT EXERCISE EQUIPMENT. Funding this project will upgrade the exercise equipment at one of the district’s largest parks which hasn’t been upgraded in close to a decade. Residents will benefit from access to fitness equipment right in their own community.

2) $56,000 for IS77 TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE.  This project will fund 133 new laptops to facilitate online learning for middle school students.

3) $125,000 for LYONS COMMUNITY SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE. Funding for this project will support a technology upgrade for students, including 100 new laptops to enhance online learning.

4) $300,000 for MARIA HERNANDEZ DOG RUN UPGRADE. As the only formal dog run in Bushwick funding this project at $300k is a first installment in the total cost to fully upgrade the space. These necessary repairs would allow for better usage of the space.

5) $300,000 for NORTH BROOKLYN PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AND PUBLIC SPACE IMPROVEMENTS. This multi-site project will construct curb extensions and permanent plazas in Williamsburg. Pedestrian safety will be improved by shortening crossing distances and calming vehicular traffic. The public realm will be enhanced as roadway space is reclaimed for pedestrians.

6) $150,000 for PS81Q ANNEX HALLWAY RENOVATION.  Funding this project will enable the school to renovate its hallway flooring to benefit their 3K, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students. It will improve safety and promote a positive learning environment for the entire school community.
