Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and Go Green BK is all about loving our environment. We can show love to ourselves and the generations who will inherit the earth by taking care of it! These are a few of our favorite ways to show #GreenLove:
Don’t use plastic bags at the grocery store!
Have you heard of Eco-Hero Jennie Romer? She fought to reduce plastic bag use in San Francisco and New York City, and won! Bring reusable canvas bags with you at all times. Buy fresh produce to cut out unnecessary wrapping. If you forget to bring your canvas bag, reuse the plastic bags from the grocery store as trash-can liners when you get home.
Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace is a well-known Scouting motto, which is also one of the Ten Principles of Burning Man! How many times have we walked past garbage rolling down our streets? Read about our neighbors at Newtown Creek Alliance cleaning our streets, and do the same!
Be thrifty and fashionable!
No need to contribute to the massive problem of textile waste. Start thrifting! Bring the clothes and goods you no longer need/use, and get new ones in turn. Go Green BK’s parent, Town Square, hosts seasonal free Greencycle Swaps and so do many others. Upcoming swaps include this week’s Wild Was Mama infant & toddler clothing swap, next month’s Bushwick Stop ‘n Swap and Williamsburg Stop ‘n Swap, and Greencycle Spring-Cleaning Swap in April. Check out all the swaps on Go Green BK’s calendar.
Help the trees in our concrete jungle.
Go hug a tree or, better yet, get inspired by Eco Heroes Bill Schmidt and Sophia Wohl of Greening Greenpoint, and learn how you can plant a street tree, prune the branches or decorate the tree bed with beautiful flowers. Let’s keep our city green!
Go vote!
Show your love of our community by voting. And with participatory budgeting, even kids can vote and help decide what community improvement green projects get funded!

Send us your tips, stories about the neighborhood/environment, or green events! The best way to spread the work of “greening” our world is to connect with like minded people, and where better to do that than our very own online hub, Go Green BK? See you in the Greenspace.
