Anyone buying a real tree to decorate for the holidays this year should consider recycling it in the New Year. NYC Parks and Department of Sanitation will be running Mulchfest from January 4th to 13th, 2019.
Over 25,000 trees were recycled during Mulchfest 2018, and they hope to top that number this year with your help! Trees dropped off at participating city parks, including McCarren Park at the corner of Lorimer and Driggs, will be chipped into mulch on-site and used to help protect and insulate trees through cold winter weather! If you can’t make it to a Mulchfest site to recycle your tree, DSNY will collect and compost trees left at thecurb from January 2nd to 12th (weather permitting).
When is it?
Mulchfest 2019 will run from January 4th to 13th. Chipping Weekend, when chipping trucks will be located at certain sites (including McCarren Park), will be January 12th-13th. During Chipping Weekend, you can take home a bag of mulch for your yard or to add to a street tree bed!
Where can you drop off trees?
A list of all city parks with tree drop off sites can be found on NYC Parks’ Mulchfest page, here! Some of the sites, including McCarren Park, will have on-site chipping stations on January 12th and 13th.
Prepare your tree to be “treecycled”. Make sure you remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, netting, bags, and stands before recycling your tree.
Volunteer with Greening Greenpoint in McCarren Park
McCarren Park will have a mulching event on January 12th, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Volunteers will help Greening Greenpoint spread mulch in and around the park, enjoy a hot drink, and take some mulch home with them! Learn more and register here.
