Haven’t we all stood overlooking the East River, admiring its view while wondering, “What would happen if I went for a swim?” Well, according to the Department of Environmental Protection, New York Harbor is cleaner than it has been in a long time. But there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water while still maintaining a safe distance.
For example, Greenpoint resident Kasia Kaim-Gonçalves and her daughter set sail to the East River in mid-June with North Brooklyn Boat Club to explore the waters surrounding our charming urban village. “We had a chance to take a look at oyster colonies installed by the [Billion] Oyster Project and visit the future site of the Greenpoint Monitor Museum. Thanks North Brooklyn Boat Club!”
Also, if you are around this Saturday, July 13th, you are in for a special treat! The Waterfront Alliance and its partners are hosting their 12th annual City of Water Day. With free activities throughout New York Harbor, you can book free PortNYC boat tours, check out local marine life, enjoy arts and crafts, and meet the many organizations that work with our waterfront. Our favorite activity is the Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race where 15 intrepid teams will build and race cardboard boats!
