WNYC Transmitter Park is a gem of a park in the Greenpoint district of north Brooklyn. It offers beautiful surroundings and a fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline. You can fish on the pier and watch the boats go by on the East River. Your kiddos can enjoy the playground and sprinklers, you can enjoy the lovely gardens, and everyone can enjoy a lawn with lots of open space. Transmitter Park was formerly the location of a radio station years before opening as a NYC public park in 2012. The former transmitter house of WNYC is still visible today.
SummerStarz free movies are a popular summer staple in Transmitter Park on Friday evenings, from early July through the middle of August. Presented by Town Square BK, a local non-profit community organization, the line-up includes cartoons and live-action films, all chosen to appeal to kids and adults, alike. And of-course, spectators can take in the beautiful waterfront scenery before the movie. There’s always a lovely breeze from the river to cool down the hot summer days. It is a wonderful opportunity to relax and build relationships with neighbors and loved ones. You will be outside surrounded by nature, instead of inside a movie theater. And it is completely free!
Gather your family, call some friends, and snag some free tickets at https://SummerStarz-2022.eventbrite.com. What a wonderful way to end the week.
P.S. SummerStarz just learned that they cannot screen Top Gun on August 12th as originally planned (a decision by Mr. Cruise et al). Instead, they will show Encanto, which was previously rained out on July 8th.
P.P.S. SummerStarz does not allow dogs. As you can see from the photos, the movie nights are popular and can get very crowded. Please keep your fur-babies at home, for everyone’s sake.
