SUMMARY:Conflict Transformation Circles for Community Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Conflict is natural and can happen even in the most well-organized garden group or with the best of friends. How can we hold space for and resolve conflict within our groups? In these monthly sessions\, mediators Skye Roper-Moses and Michelle Jackson will facilitate discussion circles for community gardeners to bring their challenges to the group and collectively generate solutions. The facilitators will model skills for holding space that gardeners can bring back to their groups to develop a practice for addressing and transforming conflict in the garden; this will be a confidential space that is not recorded. These sessions are held monthly\, and themes for discussion are based on issues brought forward at the prior session. Participants are welcome to attend them all or drop in for one. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public. \n\n\nLocation: Virtual/Online Workshop\n\nCost: Free\n\nRegistration: Register Here\n\nEvent Organizer: GreenThumb\n\nContact Email: greenthumbinfo@parks.nyc.gov

SUMMARY:DSNY Residential Bins Info Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Residential Waste Containerization\nTo remove the mountains of black bags on New York City streets\, reclaim public space\, and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers\, DSNY has announced a plan to containerize all residential trash beginning fall 2024. \nThe new rules also apply to special-use buildings receiving DSNY collection – including City agencies\, nonprofits\, houses of worship\, and professional offices in residential buildings. \nInfo Sessions\nJoin a virtual info session to learn more about DSNY’s new containerization rules. \n\nThursday\, January 9 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, January 23 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, February 6 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, February 13 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, February 27 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, March 13 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, March 27 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, April 10 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, April 24 at 4:00 PM\n\nResidential Buildings with 1-9 Units\nBeginning November 12\, 2024\, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use bins\, 55 gallons or less\, with secure lids for trash set out. \nIf you already use a bin with a secure lid that is 55 gallons or less for trash set out\, you may continue to use it until June 2026. After that\, you will need to switch to the official NYC Bin. \nLearn more about NYC Bin requirements. \nOfficial NYC Bins\nThe NYC Bin is the next step in New York City’s plan to get black bags of garbage off the streets and make our city cleaner and safer for all New Yorkers. \nOn July 8\, 2024\, the City unveiled the NYC Bin\, the official trash bin for properties with 1-9 residential units. Separate NYC Bins are also available for purchase for recycling and composting\, though they are not required. \nThe NYC Bin is now available for purchase at a significantly lower price than similar bins at retail stores\, at www.bins.nyc or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS. \nNYC Bins are exclusively available for NYC property owners and building managers and will only be delivered to addresses within the five boroughs. \nThe NYC Bin was selected following the City’s release of an RFP in October 2023 to contract a vendor to produce official NYC Bins. In the RFP\, DSNY mandated that the vendor produce bins according to specifications including\, but not limited to: \n\nCost no more than $50 for the most common size\nAvailable in multiple sizes to accommodate different types of buildings.\nRat resistant\, easy to use by sanitation workers\, and compatible with mechanized collection trucks.\n\nDSNY will retrofit or replace hundreds of collection trucks\, adding mechanical tippers compatible with the new bins. This upgrade will speed up collection and minimize the possibility of spills that occur with manual collection. Two sanitation workers will be needed to operate the mechanism\, and this change will not affect DSNY workforce numbers. \nResidential Buildings with 10+ Units\nNYC is also advancing a plan to containerize trash in larger residential buildings. \nBuildings with 31 or more residential units will be required to use stationary\, on-street containers for their trash\, serviced by DSNY’s new automated side-loading garbage trucks. On-street containers will be assigned to a specific building\, solely for residents of that building. \nBuildings with 10 to 30 units will be able to choose between stationary on-street containers and smaller wheelie bins. \nThe first district with these containers will be Manhattan Community Board 9\, beginning Spring 2025\, with further expansion pending environmental review.

SUMMARY:Newtown Creek Long Term Control Plan Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sign up here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIucuqprTgrHdUIGWq7VQKBzPbUvHi_2ac8#/registration \nGet involved in a critical issue: Sewage Overflow into Newtown Creek! 🚽 \nNYC DEP is currently proposing a modification to the ‘Long Term Control Plan’ (LTCP) — a NY-State approved initiative to reduce Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) in Newtown Creek. \nThe current plan will reduce overall CSO volume into Newtown Creek by approximately 61% and be complete in 2040. The proposed modification will capture more sewage and prevent the planned diversion of overflow to the East River\, but it still leaves over 350 million gallons of untreated sewage going to Newtown Creek each year. Additionally\, the modification will result in a 10-year delay toward achieving significant sewage reduction for the Dutch Kills tributary. \nNCA has long advocated for increased CSO capture. We can not wait until 2040\, to only have a ~65% reduction. Newtown Creek\, especially the small and stagnant tributaries\, can not be safe for our local communities\, or wildlife populations\, with 350+ million gallons of annual CSO. This modification is an opportunity to get us closer to actually achieving clean waters\, as well as the City’s own goal of zero CSO citywide by 2060. \nSo what can we do about it? \n1. Learn more about the proposed plan! On Thursday\, @riverkeeper and NCA will host a virtual meeting where NYC DEP will present about the proposed modification. 🔗 \n2. Speak for the Creek! Join us in asking NY State DEC (who approves the plan)\, and NYC DEP (who implements the plan) to capture as much sewage overflow as possible via Riverkeeper’s Action Alert. Comments are due Friday\, December 13.

\n\nThursday\, October 17 at 6:00 PM (Spanish and Chinese translations available)\nThursday\, October 24 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, October 31 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, November 7 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, November 14 at 4:00 PM (Spanish and Chinese translations available)\nThursday\, November 21 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, December 12 at 4:00 PM (Spanish and Chinese translations available)\n\nResidential Buildings with 1-9 Units\nBeginning November 12\, 2024\, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use bins\, 55 gallons or less\, with secure lids for trash set out.
