SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Virtual Educator Workshop #1
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. They will also receive $1\,500 to build their experiment and a 3D printed flight box in which to build it.\n\n\n\nImportant Dates:\n\n· Aug. 31st: Virtual Educator Workshop #1 RSVP HERE\n· September 14th: Virtual Educator Workshop #2 RSVP HERE\n· September 29th: Virtual student field trip RSVP HERE\n· October 20th: Experiments submissions due\n\n\n\n\nAll TechRise Student Challenge info + submission guidelines can be found here: https://www.futureengineers.org/nasatechrise. The full press kit including FAQ and assets is here.

SUMMARY:Meeker Avenue Plume Community Advisory Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join your neighbors in giving voice to the community as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cleans up the heavily contaminated Meeker Avenue Plume Superfund site. All are welcome\, no prior knowledge or expertise required. \nAt the July meeting\, we will be speaking with two experienced facilitators of other Community Advisory Groups in Brooklyn. Patrick Field\, the current facilitator of the Newtown Creek CAG will be joining from CBI. Doug Sarno\, the current facilitator of the Gowanus Canal CAG will also be joining us from the Participation Company. \n  \nWhat is the Meeker Avenue Plume? \nThe EPA has listed the Meeker Avenue Plume as a Superfund site\, meaning it is a heavily contaminated area slated for cleanup. The soil and groundwater at the Meeker Avenue Plume site are contaminated with chemicals harmful to human and environmental health. \nWhere is the Meeker Avenue Plume?\nThe area under investigation is in the Greenpoint/East Williamsburg area and spans several city blocks. \nWhat is a Community Advisory Group (CAG)?\nA CAG’s purpose is to provide a public forum for community members to present and discuss their needs and concerns related to the Superfund decision-making process. \n  \nEPA website: https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/SiteProfiles/index.cfm?fuseaction=second.cleanup&id=0203407 \nMap: https://cimc.epa.gov/ords/cimc/f?p=CIMC:MAP:0::NO::P71_IDSEARCH:SF_SITE_ID|0203407 \n

SUMMARY:Microplastics
DESCRIPTION:In response to one of the biggest emerging environmental concerns\, Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) formed the Microplastics Team in 2021 to develop the Microplastics Guidance Document. Plastics have become pervasive in modern life and are now used in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications. Microplastics may result from the degradation and fragmentation of larger plastics\, or they may be intentionally produced for specific applications and products. Regardless of their origin\, microplastics are now ubiquitous in our environment. Because of their small size and pervasiveness in the environment\, microplastics\, along with any other contaminants which are adhered to the microplastics\, may be inadvertently consumed by humans and other organisms. \nThe online ITRC Guidance Document (available in February 2023) is geared toward an audience with reasonable level of scientific understanding\, but not microplastic-specific knowledge. The guidance provides a user with information on microplastics and the state of the applied science without having to go to the scientific literature. \nThe target audience for the guidance and this training course includes state regulators and environmental consultants\, as well as community and tribal stakeholders. \nThe guidance and this associated training course uses a conceptual site model to navigate microplastics in the environment and explore the following general areas: \n\nAn introduction to microplastics\, their sources\, and worldwide distribution\nThe pathways through which microplastics can enter and travel in the environment and their distribution in various media (water\, soil\, sediment\, air\, and biota)\nA current look at the most common techniques and best practices for sampling and analyzing microplastics\nPotential human health and ecological risks associated with microplastics in the environment\nAn overview of existing regulations related to microplastics and macroplastics at the state\, federal\, and international levels\nExamples of prevention and mitigation strategies and best management practices to reduce microplastics from entering the environment and the emerging technologies to abate\, treat\, and remediate microplastics once they exist in the environment\nIdentification of data gaps and the need for further research\nSeveral case studies illustrating a range of current microplastics-related topics\n\nPrior to attending the training class\, participants are encouraged to view the associated ITRC Microplastics Guidance document.
