SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Entries Deadline
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. They will also receive $1\,500 to build their experiment and a 3D printed flight box in which to build it.\n\n\n\nImportant Dates:\n\n· Aug. 31st: Virtual Educator Workshop #1 RSVP HERE\n· September 14th: Virtual Educator Workshop #2 RSVP HERE\n· September 29th: Virtual student field trip RSVP HERE\n· October 20th: Experiments submissions due\n\n\n\n\nAll TechRise Student Challenge info + submission guidelines can be found here: https://www.futureengineers.org/nasatechrise. SUMMARY:Climate Week Webinar 5: An Island Without Water – Understanding the Inequities to Accessing the Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:It is rare for New Yorkers to understand they live in a city surrounded by water. So many are either unaware of the water or how to access it. This is an unfortunate reality for many young people and families where large new waterfront parks are not the norm. Join us for a conversation that discusses the current inequities in access to useable waterfronts\, how environmental justice communities carry the burden\, and the severe limitations of underdeveloped waterfronts that provide no community benefits and are at significant risk due to climate hazards. We will also explore the physical/mental/social implications of not being able to access these natural\, water-filled\, and inspiring spaces. \n  \nSPEAKERS John Doyle\, President\, City Island Rising Daniel Rannells\, Director of Programs and Operations\, Bronx River Alliance Ben Regas\, Community Organizer\, Waterfront Alliance Arif Ullah\, Executive Director; South Bronx Unite \n  \nMODERATOR Furhana Husani\, Director of Programs and Climate Initiatives\, Waterfront Alliance

DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning\, collaborating\, and sharing best practices with like-minded organizations/individuals who are actively involved with reducing plastic consumption in the New York Harbor and surrounding water? Join us for a roundtable discussion that will bring together organizations and individuals who are actively involved in addressing one of the biggest and seemingly insurmountable environmental crises of our time. In small groups\, we’ll share what we’re each doing to address the plastics issue and identify opportunities for collaboration\, while gauging interest in establishing a formal working group to regularly convene around this topic. \n  \nFACILITATOR Jennifer Coffey\, Executive Director\, Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions

SUMMARY:Climate Week Webinar 3: No Single Solution to Living with Climate Change: Understanding the Many Solutions to Building Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Waterfront Alliance and the Rise to Resilience Coalition. From the increasing extreme weather events to rising sea levels\, we must tackle not only how to stop the climate crisis\, but how to become resilient and adapt to it. Join a discussion on the many viable solutions that must work hand-in-hand for New York City. There is no silver bullet\, or single solution\, to address the extreme weather challenges across the five boroughs. In this webinar\, we explore current approaches taken by the federal\, state and city governments\, including the Army Corps’s New York-New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries Study\, to prepare for extreme weather events\, sea level rise\, and urban island heat effect. We will explore the critical need for sustained advocacy and coalition-building to ensure all of the many strategies become reality and are equitable\, implementable\, and actionable. \n  \nSPEAKERS Kate Boicourt\, Director\, Climate-Resilient Coasts and Watersheds\, New York-New Jersey\, Environmental Defense Fund Pamela Pettyjohn\, Executive Director\, Coney Island Beautification Project Tyler Taba\, Senior Manager for Climate Policy\, Waterfront Alliance \n  \nMODERATOR Cortney Koenig Worrall\, President and CEO\, Waterfront Alliance
