How does the debris help interpret the story of old New Amsterdam and today’s New York? “We walk on our own history\,” Robin Nagle reminds us.Join Robin Nagle\, Anthropologist-in-Residence at the NYC Department of Sanitation and Clinical Professor in Liberal Studies at NYU\, and Michael T. Lucas\, Curator of Historical Archeology\, New York State Museum\, as they help us sort through the trash. \nThe program will be moderated by Robert Snyder\, Manhattan Borough Historian. \n\n\n\n\nRobin Nagle is anthropologist-in-residence with the city’s Department of Sanitation. Her book\, Picking Up\, explores the surprising challenges and hazards of waste management in New York\, and includes accounts of her time on the job as a sanitation worker. She is also a clinical professor in Liberal Studies at New York University\, where she teaches anthropology\, environmental studies\, urban history\, and oral history. \nMichael T. Lucas is Curator of Historical Archaeology at the New York State Museum in Albany where he manages a collection of over 5 million artifacts recovered from archaeological sites across the state of New York\, including a sizable collection of Dutch artifacts from Manhattan. He broadly studies rural production\, labor\, and community formation during the 17th through 19th centuries. His current field research program focuses on the contributions and struggles of African American farmers in the Hudson River Valley from 1780 to 1880. \nRobert W. Snyder\, Manhattan Borough Historian and professor emeritus of Journalism and American Studies at Rutgers University\, is editing a documentary history of the Covid pandemic in New York City. He is a former Fulbright lecturer in American Studies and a member of the New York Academy of History. His books include Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York and All the Nations Under Heaven: Immigrants\, Migrants and the Making of New York.

It is modeled on recommendations made by the Traffic Mobility Review Board on Nov. 30. \nFrom Wednesday\, Dec. 27\, 2023\, through Monday\, March 11\, 2024\, members of the public may submit written comments online and by email\, mail and fax\, and may submit audio comments by leaving a voicemail message. The applicant’s stated purpose for the replacement is to storm harden and protect critical infrastructure for fire suppression at their existing facility in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and New York City (NYC) Building Code flood construction guidelines. The new SWPH (approximately 98 foot wide by 67 foot long) is to be constructed directly northwest of the existing pump house on an existing pile-supported dock and pier system. Subsequent to construction of the new SWPH\, the existing SWPH (approximately 40-foot-wide by 80-foot-long) will be demolished and removed. In addition\, the existing open-top intake structure will be covered in place with steel plates. The new SWPH will consist of an intake structure (approximately 27-foot-long by 24-foot-wide) that meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for fire protection and includes four (4) pre-cast concrete bays\, five (5) intake pumps\, and a double set of intake screens at the seaward side of the four (4) bays. The project includes installation of approximately twelve (12) 18-inch diameter steel piles to support the intake structure and installation of eighty (80) 16-inch diameter and two (2) 18-inch diameter steel piles to support the pump house building. Additional regulated work activities within NYSDEC’s jurisdiction include construction of an intake scour pad (~1\,101 square feet) and associated rip rap and maintenance of the existing dock and pier system. To facilitate installation of the intake structure an existing section of the existing timber pier decking will be removed. The project includes minor dredging and excavation of sediment to facilitate construction of the new intake structure\, scour pad\, and associated piles. Each year\, business leaders\, political change makers\, local decision takers and civil society representatives of all ages and backgrounds\, from all over the world\, gather to drive the transition\, speed up progress\, and champion change that is already happening. \nClimate Week NYC is hosted by Climate Group\, an international non-profit whose purpose is to drive climate action\, fast. Climate Group hosts the official program during the week that brings together the most senior international figures from business\, government\, civil society and the climate sector. \nThis year Climate Week NYC will be held from September 17-24\, 2023. SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Virtual Educator Workshop #2
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality.
