SUMMARY:Make Music NY
DESCRIPTION:Make Music New York is New York City’s only music festival for the people and by the people! \nMake Music New York is a unique festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City. All of the performances take place annually on June 21st\, the first day of summer and longest day of the year. Completely different from a typical music festival\, Make Music New York is open to anyone who wants to take part. From ten in the morning to ten at night\, every kind of musician — young and old\, amateur and professional\, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets\, sidewalks\, parks and plazas to share their music with friends\, neighbors\, and strangers. \nThousands of amateur musicians take the opportunity to play in public spaces\, often for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional musicians perform for new audiences\, who come out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free. And everyone is invited to sing or play along and enjoy the first day of summer in a spirit of celebration. With over 1\,000 concerts each year\, Make Music New York includes a number of signature projects: “Mass Appeal Concerts\,” in which dozens of musicians band together to perform massive pieces written for a specific type of instrument; “Punk Island”; “Porch Stomp” folk festival; “Street Studios\,” and many more.

SUMMARY:The Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join the world in connecting to birds – February 16–19\, 2024.\nProject Goal\nEach February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. \nWhat’s Changed?\nIn 2020 we designed a new website to help make your 4-day count easy\, clear\, and inspiring! In an effort to spread the love of birdwatching even further\, we’ve moved away from using the Charley Harper image (pictured below). Instead\, we use pictures of birds and people from around the world participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. No matter what corner of the world you live in or visit\, we want to share in your joy of birdwatching. \nOur History\nLaunched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society\, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online participatory-science project (also referred to as community science or citizen science) to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation in Canada. In 2013\, we became a global project when we began entering data into eBird\, the world’s largest biodiversity-related participatory science (community science or citizen science) project. \nEach year our participation grows as more people of all ages around the world spend their weekend counting\, learning about\, and celebrating birds. See results from past years highlighting the data and trends from the Great Backyard Bird Counts. \nJoint Partnership\nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada. We work together to bring the joys of bird watching to our members. \n\n\nJoin Us\nWhether you count one bird or hundreds\, participating is easy and fun for all ages! Let birds bring you closer to nature and to each other by spending four days in February with us! \n\nHow to Participate\n\n\n\n\nParticipating is easy\, fun to do alone or with others\, and can be done anywhere you find birds. \nStep 1: Decide where you will watch birds. \nStep 2: Watch birds for 15 minutes or more\, at least once over the four days\, February 16–19\, 2024. \nStep 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings: \n\nIf you are a beginning bird admirer and new to bird identification\, try using the Merlin Bird ID app to tell us what birds you are seeing or hearing.\nIf you have participated in the count before and want to record numbers of birds\, try the eBird Mobile app or enter your bird list on the eBird website (desktop/laptop).\n\nIf you already contribute to Merlin or eBird\, continue what you are doing! All entries over the 4-days count towards GBBC.

SUMMARY:City of Forest Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, October 14\, 2023 for the second annual City of Forest Day! \nLet’s learn\, care for\, and celebrate the NYC urban forest. Did you know that New York City is home to more than 7 million trees\, hundreds of acres of woodlands\, and miles of trails? A healthy urban forest is essential for a healthy city—providing critical habitat for wildlife\, cleaning our air and water\, cooling our neighborhoods\, and improving our health and wellbeing. \nPresented by Forest for All NYC in partnership with the Parks and Open Space Partners – NYC Coalition and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation\, City of Forest Day is a day of activities across the city to raise awareness of the importance of the New York City urban forest\, and the essential role New Yorkers play every day in caring for the “lungs” of our city. \nMost events in Brooklyn are already on our Go Green BK calendar. Events in other boroughs can be found here: https://forestforall.nyc/city-of-forest-day/
