DESCRIPTION:Join NCA and Sane Energy Project on this 5-mile bike tour\, showcasing the past and present of energy infrastructure along Newtown Creek. \n\n\n\n\nThis 5-mile bike tour will explore the past\, present\, and future of fossil fuel infrastructure along Newtown Creek. From the establishment of the world’s first kerosene refinery in 1854\, to the ongoing cleanup of the country’s largest terrestrial oil spill\, to the current environmental justice impacts stemming from National Grid’s 117 acre Liquified Natural Gas facility – Newtown Creek has a long and troubled history with fossil fuel production\, storage\, and pollution. We will see many of the historic and current operations along the Creek\, learn more about the hazards they present\, and discuss paths towards a cleaner energy future. \nWe encourage those joining to be fairly comfortable bicyclists – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining\, found here. \nPlease bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and weather-appropriate clothing. SUMMARY:Cleanup and Plant Care at Manhattan Ave Street End Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance for a stewardship and planting event at one of our favorite waterfront parks in Greenpoint!\n\n\n\nNewtown Creek Alliance invites you to join us at Manhattan Ave Street End Park for a clean up + planting volunteer event! \nThis public space sits at the former site of the Vernon Avenue Bridge (replaced by the Pulaski in the late1940’s). In the years since\, it had been used as a parking lot and dumping site\, before being transformed into a park space with water access and a native wildflower meadow. \nThis event will include: \n\nLandscaping the existing vegetation\nTrash cleanup throughout the space\nRemoving specific plant aggressive species like bindweed\nPlanting of native wildflowers and grasses from our nursery!\n\n​​We will provide gloves\, tools\, safety vests\, and guidance on how to safely complete our tasks for the day. Before the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form (Adult form here and Minor form here). \nMeetup Location: We will be meeting at Manhattan Ave Street End Park in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn. \nPlan ahead for the event: Please wear weather-appropriate clothes\, sturdy shoes\, and bring your own water bottle and sunscreen if need be. We will have water and snacks on hand for volunteers. There are no bathrooms directly on site\, but local businesses may allow you to use their facilities. If you are unable to attend\, we ask you to please release your spot at least one day in advance.

DESCRIPTION:Join North Brooklyn Community Boathouse (NBCB) for free canoe rides along Newtown Creek in Greenpoint\, BK! \nDate: Saturday September 13\, 2025 \nTime: 12-4pm \nLocation: Manhattan Avenue Park\, (next to 1205 Manhattan Ave\, Brooklyn\, 11222) \nNBCB’s Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best – fulfill our mission to enable public access to the waterways of NYC for our local community. Join us on Saturday September 13\, 12pm – 4pm\, for free canoe rides in our 29-foot Langley canoes. Led by trained ACA trip leaders\, participants will paddle down Newtown Creek and out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn\, and Queens. These trips are family friendly\, and run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nNo registration is required\, the event is first come\, first serve. \nWe welcome our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn about Greenpoint’s history and its environmental challenges and successes. Get out on the water and see the neighborhood as you never have before! \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancellation.
