DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance as we work in up-potting\, weeding\, and nursery maintenance in our Newtown Native Greenhouse and Nursery! \n\n\n\n\nGreenhouse Gang is back! Join us May 5th as we kick off Spring with our first hands-on event! \nNCA welcomes volunteers and horticulture enthusiasts to help us expand our native nursery\, propagated from locally collected wild seed. Plants grown in our greenhouse are used to supplement our restoration projects around the Creek\, maintain the rooftop meadows at Kingsland Wildflowers\, and integrated into our Newtown Native Nursery. This is an ideal opportunity for those looking to support an attractive habitat for our local ecology. \nOur horticulturist Brenda Suchilt will be on site to help guide activities such as up-potting and plant maintenance\, as well as answer any questions you may have. \nFollowing our kick-off event\, the series will then run every third Tuesday of the month throughout the growing season. When selecting a ticket type\, please register for a specific date to volunteer with the Greenhouse Gang you are expected to join. \nBefore the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form (Adult form here and Minor form here).

SUMMARY:Bike Tour: Creek Crossings
DESCRIPTION:Join NCA on this 9-mile bike tour\, exploring every bridge spanning Newtown Creek! \n\n\n\n\nA bicycle journey across every bridge over Newtown Creek! \nJoin Newtown Creek Alliance on Sunday\, April 26\, for our “Creek Crossings” bike tour – an ambitious passage over every bike-crossable bridge over the Creek! On this route\, we’ll cover around nine miles\, traverse eight bridges\, and highlight several other historic creek crossings along the way. Our tour will depart from Kingsland Wildflowers shortly after 10 AM\, and end by 1 PM in East Williamsburg. \nWe encourage those joining to be fairly comfortable bicyclists – this route has adverse street conditions\, inclines\, and frequent truck traffic. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining\, found here. \nPlease bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and weather-appropriate clothing. SUMMARY:Earth Day Mini Marsh Launch!
DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance for the launch of TINA\, our mini marsh tank\, at Kingsland Wildflowers! \n\n\n\n\nThis Earth Day\, April 22\, Newtown Creek Alliance will be launching “TINA” — an experimental marsh tank\, which will live Creekside at Kingsland Wildflowers for the next six months. \nTINA is a 600-gallon aquaculture tank\, planted with saltmarsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and hundreds of Atlantic ribbed mussels (Geuksensia demissa) — two native wetland species that used to exist in abundance in Newtown Creek. Twice daily\, TINA fills up with Creek water\, allowing the mussels and SparTINA to filter and clean the water before being released. Over the course of this 6-month trial\, TINA will filter hundreds of thousands of gallons of Creek water\, with NCA and partners taking water quality samples and data throughout. \nTo celebrate the start of TINA’s tenure\, join us Creekside at Kingsland Wildflowers this Earth Day: check out the tank\, look at some mussels and other Creek species\, and learn more about our water quality advocacy. Food and drinks will be provided!

SUMMARY:Sewer Tunnel Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:This 7-mile bike tour will follow the proposed route of the Department of Environmental Protection’s planned Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Storage Tunnel for Newtown Creek. Years in the making\, this massive\, multi-billion dollar infrastructure project will bring much needed relief and reduction to the repeated discharging of untreated sewage entering Newtown Creek during rain events. 2025 is a critical year for designing the tunnel and getting everything lined up to begin construction in the coming years (the project completion date is 2040). \nAlong the way\, we’ll pass pump houses\, sewer grates\, and CSO discharge points\, stopping frequently to talk about existing infrastructure and the DEP’s planned underground work. \nWe encourage those joining to be comfortable bicycling in the City – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic. We ask that attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining\, found here. Please bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and weather-appropriate clothing.
