SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: Hattie Carthan Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \n\nHattie Carthan Community Garden is a multigenerational and multicultural community garden in Bedford-Stuyvesant\, Brooklyn named after community advocate Hattie Carthan\, who was instrumental in the planting of over fifteen hundred trees in Bed-Stuy and the creation of the Magnolia Tree and Earth Center\, a group of people who were the first stewards of the community garden. Since 1991\, garden members have continue the tradition of engaging with neighbors to expand their knowledge of plants and learn how to their own food in an urban setting. \nJoin us for a hands-on volunteer day to help beautify the garden for GreenThumb’s 44th Annual Harvest Fair! We’ll work to prepare the pathways\, restore and paint garden furniture\, remove weeds\, and collect debris. This is a great opportunity to support a dynamic community space while learning about urban agriculture. Please wear comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks. Note: Some tasks may involve lifting heavy materials and extended periods of bending\, squatting\, and moving. \nRegister here! \nGroups of 10 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City.
