SUMMARY:Sustainable Sewing: Intro to Sewing Machine Basics (Greenpoint Library)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon to learn the basics and operation of a sewing machine with our Fiber Artist/Librarian Molloy Rogers. \nYou will walk away with an understanding of: \n\nSewing machine functions\nStitch settings and when to use them\nSewing machine presser foot functions and other accessories\nBobbin creation and operation\nA project sewn by you to take home\n\nSewing machines are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. \nThis class will qualify you for sewing machine use in the branch at our monthly sewing circles. The series will be followed in the spring and summer by Sustainable Sewing: Mending and Repair. \nMolloy Rogers\, a BPL Children’s Librarian is a maker\, artist\, and designer.  She learned to knit and crochet from her grandmother and taught herself to sew\, spin yarn\, dye fiber\, and make felt. In 2012\, she received the Samuel A. Almon scholarship to Penland School of Crafts\, where she studied the applications of natural dyes\, and the Shibori process as applied to weaving. \nRegistration for this event will open on Monday\, March 18th at 10am ~ Registration has reached capacity. Waitlist is full.

DESCRIPTION:Ages 6-10 \nRegistration is required. Child’s grown-up must be present. \nThis week in Geology Club we will be covering Coral!  Often mistaken as rocks\, coral are colorful living creatures that can be found all over our shallow warm ocean waters. \n  \nAccessibility \n\nWe are a 5-minute walk off the Nassau G stop. Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.\n\n\nPhoto credit: Qui Nguyen

DESCRIPTION:Registration is required. 18+ \n***\nThis Pi Day (3/14)\, join Astronomy on Tap NYC and the Amateur Astronomer Association at the Greenpoint branch of the Brooklyn Public Library for an evening dedicated to the upcoming solar eclipse! \nHosted by Astronomy on Tap’s own Brian Levine (he/him) aka MC Tycho Brewhaha\, we will feature two presentations – one with information on how to safely watch an eclipse\, and a second about Einstein’s historic use of an eclipse in 1919 to further his research work! We’ll also have a game with prizes\, and everyone in attendance will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses! \nThis event is 18+ and note that while there will not be alcohol served at the event\, it may not be appropriate for children. After the event\, those 21+ are invited to a nearby bar\, to continue the conversation. \nSchedule:\n5:45pm   Doors open\, game begins\n6:00pm   Presentation starts\n7:30pm   Head out of to nearby bar \nOur speakers:\nKat Troche (she/her) is an amateur astronomer and NASA Solar System Ambassador. When she isn’t live-streaming astronomy under the name “Kuiper Kat\,” she is taking it to the street with sidewalk astronomy sessions around the five boroughs\, and runs day-to-day operations for NASA’s Night Sky Network and the Amateur Astronomers Association here in NYC. \nChris Carr (he/him) is a PhD candidate at Columbia in Astronomy. He studies how galaxies like our Milky Way have formed and evolved over the history of the universe. He is a native of Cleveland\, OH and is excited to be returning home to view the solar eclipse over Lake Erie with his family!

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skill sharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…there will be embroidery! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon to learn the basics and operation of a sewing machine with our Fiber Artist/Librarian Molloy Rogers. \nYou will walk away with an understanding of: \n\nSewing machine functions\nStitch settings and when to use them\nSewing machine presser foot functions and other accessories\nBobbin creation and operation\nA project sewn by you to take home\n\nSewing machines are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. \nThis class will qualify you for sewing machine use in the branch at our monthly sewing circles. The series will be followed in the spring and summer by Sustainable Sewing: Mending and Repair. \nMolloy Rogers\, a BPL Children’s Librarian is a maker\, artist\, and designer.  She learned to knit and crochet from her grandmother and taught herself to sew\, spin yarn\, dye fiber\, and make felt. In 2012\, she received the Samuel A. Almon scholarship to Penland School of Crafts\, where she studied the applications of natural dyes\, and the Shibori process as applied to weaving. \nRegistration is required for these events. Masks are highly encouraged in Brooklyn Public Library. Registration will open on February 29 2024 1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:As we head into a third snowless New York City winter\, climate anxiety is widespread among youth. 75% of young people say the future is frightening\, and although most parents agree that children need to know about climate change\, only half have discussed it with their kids. \nThis interactive talk with Anya Kamenetz\, will share research-supported strategies for talking to children about climate from kindergarten through 12th grade– calming anxiety\, sharing hope\, and taking action on the local level. \nAnya Kamenetz speaks\, writes\, and thinks about thriving\, and raising thriving kids\, on a changing planet. Her newsletter on these topics is The Golden Hour. She covered education for many years including for NPR\, where she co-created the podcast Life Kit: Parenting. Her newest book is The Stolen Year: How Covid Changed Children’s Lives\, And Where We Go Now. Kamenetz is currently an advisor to the Aspen Institute and the Climate Mental Health Network\, working on new initiatives at the intersection of children and climate change. She volunteers as a parent ambassador with Climate Families NYC to decarbonize our public schools.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skill sharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…there will be embroidery! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. We look forward to seeing you and your projects!
