SUMMARY:Sustainable Sewing Series: Japanese Sashiko and Boro Stitching (Greenpoint Library)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an introduction to Sashiko\, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique. Sashiko stitching is a beautiful way to mend clothes and create custom designed textiles. Sashiko (“little stabs”) embroidery is easy to master and can be very meditative. Each participant will choose a simple pattern and complete their own piece of Sashiko embroidery that can be turned into a patch for mending clothes or a coaster. \nGive your clothes a new life while you turn them into pieces of art in this free workshop taught by Althea Gaskin Feurich. Beginning needleworkers welcome. Supplies are provided\, and you are welcome to bring a piece of denim clothing and your creativity. \nLimit of 16 adults. If registrants are not present when event begins and we have space\, we will accommodate last minute participants. \nRegistration will open two weeks before the event\, on July 6th at 10:30 am. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skill sharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…there will be embroidery! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. We look forward to seeing you and your projects!

June 25\, 3:30-4:30pm –  Cooking from the Garden –  8-12 years old \n  \nThe McCarren Park Demonstration Garden is an initiative of North Brooklyn Mutual Aid which grows fresh food for donation to the neighborhood’s free fridges. Since 2022\, the garden has provided 1500 pounds of produce for their neighbors. The McCarren Demo Garden also acts as a community hub for eco education and food justice.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skill sharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…there will be embroidery! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. June 25\, 3:30-4:30pm –  Cooking from the Garden –  8-12 years old \n  \nThe McCarren Park Demonstration Garden is an initiative of North Brooklyn Mutual Aid which grows fresh food for donation to the neighborhood’s free fridges. Since 2022\, the garden has provided 1500 pounds of produce for their neighbors. The McCarren Demo Garden also acts as a community hub for eco education and food justice.

SUMMARY:The Secret Life of Trash: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion on how awareness about the relationship between production\, consumerism & waste translate to action. \nOur panel will include artist Sari Carel\, whose exhibition Sari Carel: A More Perfect Circle is currently on view at Lentol Garden\, Brooklyn\, and Rebecca Bratspies\, a Professor at CUNY School of Law and the author of award winning environmental-justice comic books Mayah’s Lot\, Bina’s Plant and Troop’s Run. The panel is moderated by Nicholas Hoynes\, a PhD student in Sociology at NYU. \nNick Hoynes is a PhD student in Sociology at NYU. His work uses qualitative methods to study the social construction of environmental problems and the everyday experience of climate change. He is currently working on a project about social responses to the growing threat of ticks and tick-borne illnesses in Maine. Before graduate school\, Nick worked as an analyst for the City of New York. \nSari Carel is a Brooklyn-based\, multimedia artist and environmental activist whose projects consider interspecies communication\, relationships between people and place\, and how the senses inform perception. Recent exhibitions include The Sun Is A Mouth Of Blue at Melanie Flood Projects\, Portland\, OR; The Shape Of Play\, a public art project in Boston’s North End\, and Mud Songs For Anni at The Schneider Museum Of Art’s Art Beyond in Ashland\, OR. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies at Stundars Museum\, Solf\, Finland; Atelier Stipendium des Bundeskanzleramtes\, Vienna\, Austria; and Bundanon\, Illaroo\, Australia; Socrates Sculpture Park\, Long Island City\, NY; and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Residency on Governors Island\, NY\, among others. She is a recent recipient of a commissions award for Korean Art Forum’s 2024-2025 “Shared Dialogue\, Shared Space” program. \nRebecca Bratspies is a Professor at CUNY School of Law and the founding director of the Center for Urban Environmental Reform. A scholar of environmental justice and human rights\, Rebecca has written scores of law review articles. Her most recent book Naming Gotham: The Villains\, Rogues and Heroes Behind New York Place Names.won the New York Public Historians’ 2023 Excellence in Local History Award Her co-authored textbook Environmental Justice: Law Policy and Regulation is used in schools across the country. Rebecca is best known for her EPA Clean Air Excellence Award winning environmental-justice comic books Mayah’s Lot\, Bina’s Plant\, and Troop’s Run\, (made with artist Charlie LaGreca-Velasco.) DESCRIPTION:Join our Kids Garden Club this growing season facilitated by our neighbors at the McCarren Park Demonstration Garden. \nEach workshop  will cover a different topic\, serving children of different ages. \nPlease make sure your child fits the age group for the workshop. As we will spend time in our rooftop Demonstration Garden\, parents and caregivers are required to stay at the workshop. One child per registration please! \n*** \nTues. April 16\, 3:30-4:30pm – Plant Buds\, Plant a Garden – 8-12 years old. \nTues. May 7\, 3:30-4:30pm – Gardening for the Senses  – 4-10 years old. \nTues. May 21\, 3:30-4:30pm – Nature Cycles in our Urban Ecosystem – 6-10 years old \nTue. June 4\, 3:30-4:30pm – Life Cycle of a Flower – 6-10 years old \nSat. June 15\, 10:30-11:30am Urban Ecosystem Scavenger Hunt – 5-10 years old (Offsite at McCarren Demonstration Garden\, 457 Leonard St. BK\, 11222) \nTues. June 25\, 3:30-4:30pm –  Cooking from the Garden –  8-12 years old \n  \nThe McCarren Park Demonstration Garden is an initiative of North Brooklyn Mutual Aid which grows fresh food for donation to the neighborhood’s free fridges. Since 2022\, the garden has provided 1500 pounds of produce for their neighbors. The McCarren Demo Garden also acts as a community hub for eco education and food justice.
