DESCRIPTION:Newtown Creek is a 3.8-mile-long waterway that runs through Greenpoint. The Creek has been heavily polluted by industrial waste\, sewage overflow events\, and oil spills\, leading to its designation as a federal Superfund site. \nThe Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is a community-based organization dedicated to restoring\, revealing\, and revitalizing Newtown Creek. NCA works to restore community health\, water quality\, habitat\, access\, and commerce along the waterway. \nHow polluted is Newtown Creek? What is being done about the pollution? Can we boat on the Creek? Who is cleaning up the waterway? When can we swim in the Creek? \nWant to know the answers to these questions? Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is hosting recurring community information sessions to create an ongoing dialogue for environmental advocacy\, stewardship\, and action around the Creek. \n*** \nShangtong Sandy Li is the Community Engagement Coordinator at Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA). They have been working on all matters relating to Newtown Creek\, its cleanup\, land use\, and natural resources. Sandy is an environmental justice advocate with a background in climate science\, design\, art\, and education. They have been working with environmental organizations across New York to engage and inform communities on water quality\, parkland alienation\, and climate legislation through accessible and creative storytelling. They aim to connect people with Newtown Creek to show the life\, hope\, and resilience that exists in a Superfund site. Shangtong has a MA from the Columbia Climate School and a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art. \nGus Perry is the Greenspace Steward at Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA). Gus is a wildlife and waterway enthusiast with experience in landscaping\, woodworking\, and bicycle maintenance. Through his passion for hyperlocal history and urban-environmental intersections\, Gus has volunteered with numerous community-centered endeavors – including shellfish biotoxin research\, and non-native plant removal. As a Greenspace Steward\, Gus helps run NCA’s volunteer events and conduct regular maintenance at various street-end sites\, pollinator gardens\, and green infrastructure assets around Newtown Creek. Gus studied Journalism and Environmental Studies at Eugene Lang College and lives in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn

DESCRIPTION:Greenpoint Pilates Studio is excited to offer Pilates classes at the Greenpoint Library! \nWith a focus on full-body health\, these sessions will follow classical Pilates principles while blending contemporary movement concepts in a way that empowers all practitioners to feel strong\, knowledgeable\, and joyful in their bodies and movement. \nGreenpoint Pilates Studio offers privates\, duets\, and small group mat classes tailored for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. \nGreenpoint Pilates Studio was opened in 2022 by Allyn Wong (formerly at Zalla Pilates\,) a comprehensively and classically trained Pilates instructor that proudly calls Greenpoint home. \nOpen Level.  Yoga mats will be provided or feel free to bring your own. Please bring adequate sun protection!  Please note that this program will be moved to the second floor meeting room if there is inclement weather. \nRegistration will open 48hrs before the start of the event at 10am. DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skill sharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…there will be embroidery! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. SUMMARY:Encountering Climate Change through Storytelling and Music (Greenpoint Library)
DESCRIPTION:Join bassist\, composer\, and Director of Climate Stories Project Jason Davis who will give a presentation and performance of his climate stories music.  This presentation features the recorded voices of people from around the world speaking about their personal responses to climate change. \nJason will talk about artistic responses to the changing climate and demonstrate his work integrating climate storytelling and music\, with the goal of engaging audiences and inspiring creative responses to the climate crisis. \n  \nJason Davis leads climate storytelling workshops for participants who learn to craft and share their climate stories and to record interviews about other people’s responses to the changing climate. He also writes and performs original music that features recorded climate stories\, with the goal of engaging audiences through the power of storytelling and art. Jason is a professor of Environmental Justice and Sustainability at Oregon State University\, and was a 2024 Fulbright scholar in Brazil where he collected oral histories about the conservation of the endangered Atlantic Rain Forest.

DESCRIPTION:Greenpoint Pilates Studio is excited to offer Pilates classes at the Greenpoint Library! \nWith a focus on full-body health\, these sessions will follow classical Pilates principles while blending contemporary movement concepts in a way that empowers all practitioners to feel strong\, knowledgeable\, and joyful in their bodies and movement. \nGreenpoint Pilates Studio offers privates\, duets\, and small group mat classes tailored for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. \nGreenpoint Pilates Studio was opened in 2022 by Allyn Wong (formerly at Zalla Pilates\,) a comprehensively and classically trained Pilates instructor that proudly calls Greenpoint home. \nOpen Level.  Yoga mats will be provided or feel free to bring your own. Please bring adequate sun protection!  Please note that this program will be moved to the second floor meeting room if there is inclement weather. \nRegistration will open 48hrs before the start of the event at 10am. Registrants will be notified via email if the program is cancelled due to inclement weather.
