DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skillsharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…embroidery\, needlepoint\, etc! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. We look forward to seeing you and your projects!

SUMMARY:Eco-Fiction Lab: Reimagining Newtown Creek (Greenpoint Library)
DESCRIPTION:Eco-Fiction Labs are collaborative workshops that use fiction as a design tactic to help communities imagine and shape ecological transitions in urban environments. This edition focuses on envisioning the future of Newtown Creek—a waterway that has suffered from severe pollution over the past two centuries. We invite participants of all ages\, including community members\, neighbors\, and artists\, to share perspectives and co-create speculative futures for the creek and its shores. \n  \nThe session will begin at Greenpoint Library with a short introduction to the history of Newtown Creek and ongoing ecological repair efforts. From there\, we will walk to the Newtown Creek Nature Walk for a guided\, immersive experience of the creek’s current landscape and ecology. Following the walk\, participants will be invited to engage with fiction as a tool for design. Using various media—such as audio notes\, images\, photography/collage\, short texts\, or poetry—we will imagine alternative realities for the creek’s future\, guided by our desires and collective imagination. \n  \nThe ideas generated will feed into the narrative of a future exhibition\, amplifying community voices and collective desires surrounding the ecological restoration of Newtown Creek. \n  \nPlease wear comfortable walking/working shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing (including sun protection)\, and bring a refillable water bottle + a snack. \n  \nAlberto Martinez Garcia and Andrea Molina Cuadro are members of Latent Ecologies\, a NYC-based collective that advocates for designing symbiotic relationships between humans and non-humans in the urban context. \n

Puppets like Oliver Owl\, Bernie the Bee\, and Sustainable Sammy teach about the importance of trees to our ecosystems\, how bees (and bats) pollinate many foods we eat\, and how we can protect our oceans from plastics and contamination. Kids and their caregivers will sing and dance while learning about sustainability! DESCRIPTION:Ages 5-8 \nJoin the Urban Park Rangers to reveal nature in the city all around you. \nTuesdays April 1\, 8\, 15\, 29 \nAccessibility \n\nWe are a 5-minute walk off the Nassau G stop. Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.

DESCRIPTION:Trees New York Presents: Workshop Series for Teens at the Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center \nJoin us for a three-part series focused on street trees and urban landscaping\, and discover how you can contribute to the natural world around you. \nApril 7th: Benefits & Challenges\nWe’ll kick off the series in the Teen Zone (Eco Lab 3). The session will be held outdoors along the Branch\, where we’ll explore and discuss street trees. Be prepared to stand and engage in a hands-on learning experience! \nApril 21st: Urban Heat Island Effect\nLearn about how tree canopies affect different neighborhoods in New York City in our presentation. We’ll spend most of the session indoors in the Teen Zone (Eco Lab 3)\, with visits to our reading and rooftop gardens. We’ll also delve into the long history of environmental justice in Greenpoint. \nApril 28th: Green Career Exploration\nJoin us in the Teen Zone (Eco Lab 3) to explore exciting green career paths! We’ll discuss opportunities at the intersection of the environment and technology\, public policy\, sailing\, and more — perfect for teens thinking about their future careers. \nThese workshops do not require registration.
