SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: Fred McLeod Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteer gardeners who critically upkeep them as public green spaces. \nFred McLeod Community Garden\, FKA Marcus Garvey Tenants Association Garden\, is a thriving community garden in Brownsville with 30 raised beds\, multiple styles of trellises for vertical growing\, a greenhouse\, 3-bin compost\, two apple trees\, and more than 10 varieties of mint. They regularly host youth groups\, special needs schools\, and workshops\, and have received multiple City Parks Foundation grants to improve access and expand community programs. \nJoin GreenThumb and Fred McLeod Community Garden for a public workday to help prepare pathways\, weed\, prune\, paint\, organize tools\, and cover bare soil. Learn about urban gardening while supporting a vibrant\, inclusive community space! Please wear comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks. Note: Some tasks may involve lifting heavy materials and extended periods of bending\, squatting\, and moving. \nFor information about group volunteering\, please contact the GreenThumb Volunteer Program at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.
