SUMMARY:Garden Mapping (El Puente Espiritu Tierra Community Garden)
DESCRIPTION:Garden mapping is a great way to beat the winter blues and plan for the season. In this workshop\, participants will learn how to create a simple to-scale physical map of their garden space to support garden planning and record keeping. We’ll discuss environmental factors that affect planning\, such as common wind directions\, rainy or dry areas\, the direction of water drainage (lowest area)\, the pattern of the sun\, and any shadows from large structures or trees. Attendees will receive supportive literature on plant spacing\, soil chemistry\, companion plants\, and incompatible plants to support garden planning. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. We’ll have a brief garden info meeting after to discuss goals for next season. \nWhat to expect:​\n– Learn about the garden’s history\, how to get involved\, and support the space​\n– Participate in basic garden maintenance alongside garden members and GreenThumb​\n– Tools and gloves will be provided. Bring your water\, snacks\, and enthusiasm! \nMeeting/Workday Goals:\n– Remove Trash/Debris\, prune back perennials\n– Install Mesh along fenceline to prevent debris accumulation\n– Review the 2024 GreenThumb Site Visit results and Rat Mitigation strategies\n– Discuss priorities for next season\n– Designate 2 Garden Contacts to improve communications with GreenThumb
