DESCRIPTION:Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team to plant beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) at Coney Island Creek! Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region\, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome\, we harvest bare-root plant material from the Greenbelt Native Plant Center production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty\, close-toed shoes\, and warm layers. This event has been funded in part by NYC Service. \nLocation: Coney Island Creek Park\, Brooklyn. SUMMARY:NYC 520 Coney Island Creek Park Tour and Coastal Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC Parks Stewardship and the Department of City Planning (DCP) for a special tour and clean-up of our ongoing work at Coney Island Creek Park. Every year\, DCP celebrates NYC’s 520 miles of waterfront on and around May 20 (5/20) with a series of fun\, free events for the public called “NYC 520.” Since 2017\, DCP has coordinated these events across New York City with agency\, non-profit\, and community partners. This year’s events highlight efforts that seek to enhance the sustainability\, resiliency\, and ecological health of New York City’s waterfront and waterways. NYC Parks Stewardship will host a small tour of Coney Island Creek Park to highlight our ongoing restoration of dunes and highlight some of our ongoing partnerships and projects along Coney Island Creek. Participants will also have the option of joining up in a coastal clean-up after the event. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes\, long sleeves\, long pants\, and clothing that can get dirty. Space is limited and registration is required. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone. DESCRIPTION:Community Dune Grass Planting This Saturday \nThis Saturday\, April 6th from 10am to 2pm\, the American Littoral Society and the National Wildlife Federation are hosting a community dune grass planting event at Bayview & Seagate Avenues in Coney Island Creek Park\, Brooklyn\, NY 11224. \n  \nWe’re looking to get 3\,500 plants in the ground\, adding to the 10\,000 that students from two dozen NYC schools have already planted with NWF’s Resilient Schools and Communities (RiSC) program this year. \n  \nOnce planted and established\, the plants stabilize the dunes\, create a buffer against erosion and flooding from coastal storms and help build community resilience. \n  \nLocal Transportation: \nThe nearest Subway stop is the Coney Island – Stillwell Avenue Station (1.5 mile walk to site) \nQ\, D\, F\, N trains all go there\, from there you will need to take a bus to get to the park. \nBuses: B36\, B74 \n  \nWeather/Attire: \nThe weather for Saturday is calling for cloudy conditions and mid-40s. Please dress for the weather with appropriate clothing and close-toed shoes that can get wet and dirty. \n  \nIt’s always colder and windier by the water. Make sure you wear proper attire including: a warm jacket\, poncho or rain jacket\, hat\, gloves\, scarf\, sunglasses etc. \n  \nFood/Snacks/Water: \nParticipants should bring their own water (in reusable bottles) and snacks as needed. \n  \nRestrooms: \nThere are no restrooms on site. The nearest restroom facilities are located in Kaiser Park near the baseball diamond\, a roughly 15-minute walk from the shoreline. \n  \nGloves and tools will be provided. \n  \nQuestions?
