Volunteers will contribute to ongoing restoration work and learn the importance of species diversity to ecosystem health. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes\, long sleeves\, long pants\, and clothing that can get dirty. Face masks may be worn at your discretion. Space is limited and registration is required. Before the 1920s\, Paerdegat Basin was Paerdegat Creek\, a freshwater tidal creek connecting to Jamaica Bay. Canarsie Park is known for its recreation facilities\, but it is also home to a surprising number of diverse wildlife spanning multiple acquatic ecosystems due to Canarsie’s close proximity to the seashore and its lesser known wetland hiking trails. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Gloves\, garbage bags and pickers will be provided. \nPlease wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. 💧 \nThanks to Council Member Mercedes Narcisse for supporting our environmental stewardship programs. \n

DESCRIPTION:Please join us along with CM Mercedes Narcisse’s office for a volunteer cleanup at Canarsie Park in Brooklyn! \nCanarsie Park connects to Canarsie Pier and overlooks Paerdegat Basin. Before the 1920s\, Paerdegat Basin was Paerdegat Creek\, a freshwater tidal creek connecting to Jamaica Bay. Canarsie Park is known for its recreation facilities\, but it is also home to a surprising number of diverse wildlife spanning multiple acquatic ecosystems due to Canarsie’s close proximity to the seashore and its lesser known wetland hiking trails. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Their programs have impacted New Yorkers \, helping to build strong\, confident young people ready to tackle the demands of college. We’ve worked with people of all ages\, with and without physical and cognitive disabilities\, to build strength and a sense of teamwork and tenacity. \nAt Row New York\, they pull together—in the boat\, in the classroom\, as a community—to help all rowers push ahead. \nAll skill levels are invited to spend learn the fundamentals of rowing on the water with ROW NY and NYC H2O. \nPaerdegat Basin connects to the larger Jamaica Bay. As a saltwater marsh situated in Canarsie\, it plays a key role in protecting the coastal community from storm surges and erosion. \nThanks to City Council Member Mercedes Narcisse for sponsoring this community building event!

The Pier and beach remain a hotspot for fishing\, paddling and picnics. Located within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area\, Canarsie Beach and salt marsh also remain hotspots for marine wildlife and birds. \nThe cleanup will run from 10 am to 12 pm.
