SUMMARY:Resilient Parks – Design Opportunities for Bushwick Inlet Park
DESCRIPTION:FBIP 2025 Seminar Series “WHERE’S OUR PARK?” PAST→ PRESENT→ FUTURE \nFree registration required below. \nSea level rise\, storm surges and cloudburst events. These threats are design challenges but also present an opportunity for innovative and engaging park design. \nJoin Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park for a panel discussion with: \nStephen Whitehouse\, BIP 86 Kent Ave landscape designer\, urban planner\, principal\, Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners \nDr. Marcha Johnson\, landscape architect and ecological restorationist\, NYC Parks & Recreation \nBoth panelists have extensive experience in designing spaces within the public realm to help mitigate increasing threats from atmospheric changes affecting human and landscape interaction with water. With them we will explore their work\, including revisiting Stephen’s concept for BIP’s 86 Kent Ave\, and design philosophy in considering future waterfront park manifestations in the face of these challenges. \nStephen Whitehouse is a landscape architect and urban planner whose diverse pursuits share a concern for the environmental quality and social vitality of places. He formerly served as Chief of Planning for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation\, where he managed the expansion of the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows and launched the City’s Greenway system. Since co-founding Starr Whitehouse with Laura Starr\, he has worked with public and private clients to create dynamic urban districts and engaging landscapes that connect people to nature. \nRather than focusing on a single aspect of the work\, he’s always been most fascinated by the juncture points. “Natural systems\, patterns of settlement\, infrastructure – seeing all these come together to make a place is interesting to me\, not just as abstract concepts\,” he says\, “but in terms of seeing good results at the end.” He describes his role in terms of junctures as well. “I’m the translator\,” he says. “I serve as the mediator between the specialists and the public. I like communicating with people\, and seeing things shaped by the creative interactions of people and institutions.” \nMarcha Johnson\, PhD\, ASLA is a NYC landscape architect and ecological restorationist with about 40 years of specializing in shoreline designs with high habitat value in all 5 boroughs\, both as a professional and a pro-bono advisor/ volunteer. Marcha’s book\, Coastal Change\, Ocean Conservation and Resilient Communities\, co-edited with Amanda Bayley and published in December 2016 by Springer\, highlights ways to better understand and respect coastal landscapes\, design spaces affected by sea level rise and storms and live more wisely along the water. She serves on the Advisory Board for Riverkeeper\, and on the Technical Advisory Board Hudson River Park\, and has presented her waterfront designs\, ideas on conserving urban shorelines and themes from her book at local\, national and international conferences. An adjunct professor in City College of New York’s School of Architecture since 1990\, she teaches graduate courses in landscape architecture and sustainability.

SUMMARY:Drawing And Painting from Photo References: Focus on Birds (BIP)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intro to sketching and painting birds from images while learning about some of our local avian species. \nDrawing from life is often considered the ideal\, but capturing ever changing landscapes and moving subjects—especially birds—can be incredibly challenging. \nSketching and painting from photo references could sharpen your life drawing and nature journaling practice and be a fun way to create art from your own photos. \nCameras can oversaturate\, increase contrast and auto sharpen a color image; we will make our images our own by cropping\, editing and recreating lost colors and atmosphere. \nWe will introduce some of our local birds and discuss their unique characteristics and anatomy. We will then explain some of the tools artists have used for centuries\, such as Claude glass\, comparator mirror\, or camera lucida and then move on to transfer methods\, including the grid\, graphite transfer\, and device apps. We’ll touch on using watercolors\, color mixing\, and color matching. \nYou may use printed references or bring a tablet\, phone\, or laptop to practice the grid and graphite transfer method. \nMaterials Provided: \n\nPrinted bird images and magazines\n5″ x 7″ drawing paper\nPencils & pens\nRulers & straight edges\nTracing paper\nGraphite paper\nGraphite pencils\nDrafting & Washi tape\nWatercolor supplies\nWatercolor paper\nColor Wheel\n\nAs always\, please bring along your own favorite supplies if you have any! \nFree Registration required. \nChildren above 14 must be accompanied by a guardian. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker\nmonbertkayak@gmail.com \nMedical & Scientific Illustration\nIllustration Portfolio

SUMMARY:Celestial Watercolors: Painting the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Mar 30 @ 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm \n\n\nPlease join us at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of painting with watercolors. \n“Environmental Science + Art” FBIP 2024 Saturday class series: \nWe will consider how light from urban buildings affects birds and other animals\, the value of a park as a bird safe haven and effects of satellites circling the planet. \nAs the days start to get longer\, we still have plenty of opportunity to view the night sky which has fascinated people since the beginning of time. The ancients saw mythological beasts\, gods\, and goddesses; mariners once navigated using the constellations as their guide; and today we look to the future of humanity with space tourism and experiments with astrobotany. \nThere’ll be a short astronomy presentation to inform and inspire you for a fun afternoon of celestial watercolor painting. \nGuided projects include painting a sunset or the night sky with stars\, the Milkyway\, and nebulae in either a rectangular or one-point perspective (a circle). A third option will be a moon painting. \nSkills we’ll cover are wet in wet and wet on dry watercolor\, one-point perspective\, using liquid frisket (masking fluid)\, color layering\, and other watercolor basics. Beginners to advanced welcome. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. Materials provided will include include paper\, watercolors\, colored pencils\, and other basic drawing supplies. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\nmultimedia or watercolor paper\nwatercolor paints\npencil\, eraser\, ruler\, tape (for masking edges)\ncolored pencils\, markers\, or pens\n\nNo experience necessary. \nInstructor Monica Schroeder is a professional scientific illustrator. Her work has appeared in Scientific American\, countless textbooks\, natural history museum exhibitions\, and on the TV Show Jeopardy. \nShe has been an adult art instructor since 2018. monbertkayak@gmail.com \n* Registration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend.
