SUMMARY:Astronomy Night: Sidewalk Stargazing (Brower Park Library)
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this program will be cancelled in case of a forecast of clouds\, rain\, snow or poor visibility. \nWant to learn more about what we can see in the night sky? What can we see in an urban environment with light pollution? Plenty! Join the Brower Park Library for an evening of stargazing on the sidewalk outside the branch. We’ll learn how to find objects and identify them in the night sky. \nMoon Phase:  Waxing Gibbous. The illuminated surface of the moon is 72% and growing larger. The lunar cycle is 9 days young. \n  \n\n\nAstronomy Night: Sidewalk Stargazing\, Thu\, Feb 26\, 6:00pm to 7:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about what we can see in the night sky? What can we see in an urban environment with light pollution? Plenty! Join the Brower Park Library for an evening of stargazing on the sidewalk outside the branch. We’ll learn how to find objects and identify them in the night sky. \n2 Evenings \n\n\nThu\, Jan 22\, 5:00pm to 6:30pm ~ Astronomy Night: Sidewalk Stargazing: Moon Phase:  Waxing crescent 16.55%.  A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon during this time the features of the moon surface can be beautifully seen. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and therefor is mostly dark. The right edge of the moon however is bright and keeps getting brighter as the days get close to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination of the lunar body.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThu\, Feb 5\, 5:00pm to 6:30pm ~ Astronomy Night: Sidewalk Stargazing: Moon Phase:  Waning gibbous 84%.  During this phase the Moon can be seen in the early morning daylight hours on the western horizon. This is the first phase after the Full Moon occurs. It lasts roughly 7 days with the Moon’s illumination growing smaller each day until the Moon becomes a Last Quarter Moon with an illumination of 50%. The average Moon rise for this phase is between 9pm and Midnight depending on the age of the phase. The moon rises later and later each night setting after sunrise in the morning.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Forest in Flux: Climate Clues from the Temperate Woods (Brower Park Library)
DESCRIPTION:Step into the temperate forest and discover how animals rely on nature’s seasonal signals to survive—and how climate change is throwing off the timing. Through hands-on exploration and storytelling\, we’ll uncover the hidden connections between climate\, trees\, and the creatures who call the forest home. Just like the plants and animals we’ll observe\, we shall adapt to the weather as needed. \nKate (she/her) is an early childhood educator and a planetarium pilot at the American Museum of Natural History where she teaches children everything from the wonders of our very large universe to the joy found in the smallest of insects. Her favorite creature is her cat\, Vera—who is made of stardust and judgment.

SUMMARY:Bioplastics Workshop (Brower Park Library)
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make string from seaweed with Brooklyn-based industrial artist Emily Gordin! We will be using kitchen friendly science to make a bioplastic string that can be used to knit and crochet with once dry. We will also chat and learn about how biodegradable alternatives to plastics\, textiles\, and packaging can be made from regenerative materials resources. \nThis program is made possible by generous support from Con Edison.
