SUMMARY:Death\, Decay\, and Decomposition (462 Halsey Community Garden)
DESCRIPTION:Come to 462 Halsey Community Farm to learn from Master Composter and deathworker\, Pista\, who will guide attendees through a discussion on death practice and cultural stories of transformations and how it all relates back to the compost pile. Attendees will then learn some basics of compost science and work with the garden’s 3-bin system to embody some of the learnings. \nWe live in a world where resurrection\, rebirth\, and transformation are not just myths and stories we share with each other\, but the actual reality of the Universe we are a part of. Composting is the process of transforming dying\, decomposing organic matter into new life. It is a reminder that death is not the final stage\, but rather a part of a cycle to begin again. \nLocation: 462 Halsey Community Garden\, 462 Halsey Street\, Brooklyn\, NY 11221\, Brooklyn. SUMMARY:Theater in Success Garden
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in 4 wonderful theater workshops in Success Garden. \nTuesday\, July 1: Rooting the Story — Designing with Nature. We begin by exploring the garden as a place full of stories. How can plants\, paths\, and garden structures inspire a scene in a play? We’ll learn about set design and make mini models using natural and recycled materials — imagining how a garden can become the sea\, a village\, or a pirate ship! No theater experience needed\, just curiosity and a love for gardens and stories! Register Here \nTuesday\, July 8: Garden Threads — Costumes from the Earth. From sunhats to pirate coats\, costumes help bring characters to life. We’ll examine how colors\, textures\, and materials — even those found in a garden — can shape a costume. We’ll make simple costume collages and experiment with creating character looks using fabric scraps\, plants\, and imagination. No theater experience needed\, just curiosity and a love for gardens and stories! Register Here \nTuesday\, July 15: Bringing It to Life — Lights\, Sounds & Movement. Just as gardens come alive with sound and movement\, so does theater. We’ll play with ways to use light and sound outdoors. Learn how to use what’s already in the garden — from wind chimes to flashlights — to bring scenes to life in playful and meaningful ways. No theater experience needed\, just curiosity and a love for gardens and stories! Register Here \nTuesday\, July 22: A Garden in Performance — Sharing Our Creation. It’s time to put all our pieces together! We’ll install our designs in the garden and rehearse a short scene as a group. Everyone has a role\, whether you help direct\, act\, design\, or support. Invite your friends and neighbors to experience the world we’ve built — a joyful celebration of art\, plants\, and people working together. No theater experience needed\, just curiosity and a love for gardens and stories! Register Here \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: Bed-Stuy Farm
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \nBed-Stuy Farm is a vibrant green space revitalized through a partnership with the Brooklyn Rescue Mission Urban Harvest Center. It now serves as a community hub and outdoor classroom\, where neighborhood youth learn about food cultivation and community service. The garden supports local food access by distributing fresh produce through its food pantry\, and features two greenhouses\, a chicken coop\, fruit trees\, and numerous raised beds. \nJoin us for a hands-on volunteer day as we upgrade the garden’s aging wooden raised beds with long-lasting metal ones. This is a great opportunity to support a dynamic community space while learning about urban agriculture. Please wear comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks. Note: Some tasks may involve lifting heavy materials and extended periods of bending\, squatting\, and moving. \nRegister here! \nGroups of 10 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \n*** \nLocation: Bed Stuy Farm\, 404 Decatur Street\, Brooklyn. Directions to this location \nCost: Free \nEvent Organizer: NYC Parks GreenThumb\, Bed-Stuy Farm\, Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov

SUMMARY:Garden Stages: Rituals And Performance in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Escape to Nature as we continue exploring storytelling through movement\, voice\, and creativity! Just as a garden is shaped by the elements—wind\, sun\, and rain—actors use their voices and bodies to bring stories to life. This week\, we’ll dive into “Pirates! The Penzance Musical\,” experimenting with different ways to express emotions and tell a story\, much like a garden expresses itself through colors\, textures\, and seasonal changes. \nUsing found materials like leaves\, twigs\, and stones\, we’ll craft poetry that reflects the characters’ journeys and use nature to inspire movement and expression. Whether it’s the swaying of trees in the wind or the steady growth of a vine\, we’ll find parallels between the natural world and the art of performance. \nWhat we’ll do:\n– Explore how movement and voice shape storytelling\, just as nature shapes a garden.\n– Use natural materials to create poetry and inspire character choices.\n– Reimagine scenes from “Pirates!” Through the lens of nature’s rhythms and transformations. \nNo theater experience is needed—curiosity\, creativity\, and a love for the natural world!
