SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: Fred McLeod Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteer gardeners who critically upkeep them as public green spaces. \nFred McLeod Community Garden\, FKA Marcus Garvey Tenants Association Garden\, is a thriving community garden in Brownsville with 30 raised beds\, multiple styles of trellises for vertical growing\, a greenhouse\, 3-bin compost\, two apple trees\, and more than 10 varieties of mint. They regularly host youth groups\, special needs schools\, and workshops\, and have received multiple City Parks Foundation grants to improve access and expand community programs. \nJoin GreenThumb and Fred McLeod Community Garden for a public workday to help prepare pathways\, weed\, prune\, paint\, organize tools\, and cover bare soil. Learn about urban gardening while supporting a vibrant\, inclusive community space! Please wear comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks. DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \n\nHattie Carthan Community Garden is a multigenerational and multicultural community garden in Bedford-Stuyvesant\, Brooklyn named after community advocate Hattie Carthan\, who was instrumental in the planting of over fifteen hundred trees in Bed-Stuy and the creation of the Magnolia Tree and Earth Center\, a group of people who were the first stewards of the community garden. Since 1991\, garden members have continue the tradition of engaging with neighbors to expand their knowledge of plants and learn how to their own food in an urban setting. \nJoin us for a hands-on volunteer day to help beautify the garden for GreenThumb’s 44th Annual Harvest Fair! We’ll work to prepare the pathways\, restore and paint garden furniture\, remove weeds\, and collect debris. This is a great opportunity to support a dynamic community space while learning about urban agriculture. Please wear comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks.
