SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at EL Garden
DESCRIPTION:Love is in the air! Spend an afternoon with a loved one volunteering with gardeners of El Garden and NYC Parks GreenThumb! EL Garden in Bushwick\, Brooklyn is stewarded by dedicated gardeners in the community. They use the garden to grow food\, flowers\, and trees\, have a 3-bin composting system to recycle food scraps\, and several areas for social gatherings and events. The gardeners are excited to welcome and work with volunteers on various projects. \nParticipate in this workday by helping us build and expand raised beds\, build a platform for a rainwater harvesting system\, and transport soil throughout the garden. Volunteers will learn basic carpentry and garden maintenance skills! This is a great opportunity to learn about the garden’s history\, programming\, and membership process. \nGloves and tools will be provided. Join us to discuss the splendor of greens and their relevance in Afro-Indigenous diasporas\, as well as prepare a few dishes that highlight their versatility in the kitchen. \nThis session is a continuation of The Soul of Food\, a Deep Routes workshop series honoring the foodways that connect plants\, peoples\, and lands across Afro-Indigenous diasporas. \nThis event is hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all.
