Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. With the weather turning it’s a great time to come out and enjoy the reservoir and see some birds! 🐦🕊️ \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on 58-2 Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \nThis event will be in both spanish and english. \n\n\n. \nÚnase a la autora y naturalista Heather Wolf para un paseo de aves en el Ridgewood Reservoir. Estamos en la temporada alta de migración\, ¡así que es un buen momento para salir y disfrutar del embalse y ver algunas aves! 🐦🕊️ \n\n\nEl Ridgewood Reservoir en Highland Park es un oasis natural de más de 50 hectáreas que se extiende a ambos lados de la frontera de Brooklyn y Queens. The Pier and beach remain a hotspot for fishing\, paddling and picnics. Located within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area\, Canarsie Beach and salt marsh also remain hotspots for marine wildlife and birds. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and NOAA at the Canarsie Beach Cleanup! \n\n\n\nPlease join us along with CM Mercedes Narcisse’s office for a volunteer cleanup at Canarsie Beach in Brooklyn. \nThis once small fishing village saw its population boom after WWII and at one time was a major competitor to Coney Island. The Pier and beach remain a hotspot for fishing\, paddling and picnics. Located within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area\, Canarsie Beach and salt marsh also remain hotspots for marine wildlife and birds. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm.
