DESCRIPTION:Join NCA on this 9-mile bike tour\, exploring every bridge spanning Newtown Creek! \n\n\n\n\nA bicycle journey across every bridge over Newtown Creek! \nJoin Newtown Creek Alliance on Sunday\, April 26\, for our “Creek Crossings” bike tour – an ambitious passage over every bike-crossable bridge over the Creek! On this route\, we’ll cover around nine miles\, traverse eight bridges\, and highlight several other historic creek crossings along the way. Our tour will depart from Kingsland Wildflowers shortly after 10 AM\, and end by 1 PM in East Williamsburg. \nWe encourage those joining to be fairly comfortable bicyclists – this route has adverse street conditions\, inclines\, and frequent truck traffic. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining\, found here. \nPlease bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and weather-appropriate clothing. SUMMARY:Earth Day Mini Marsh Launch!
DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance for the launch of TINA\, our mini marsh tank\, at Kingsland Wildflowers! \n\n\n\n\nThis Earth Day\, April 22\, Newtown Creek Alliance will be launching “TINA” — an experimental marsh tank\, which will live Creekside at Kingsland Wildflowers for the next six months. \nTINA is a 600-gallon aquaculture tank\, planted with saltmarsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and hundreds of Atlantic ribbed mussels (Geuksensia demissa) — two native wetland species that used to exist in abundance in Newtown Creek. Twice daily\, TINA fills up with Creek water\, allowing the mussels and SparTINA to filter and clean the water before being released. Over the course of this 6-month trial\, TINA will filter hundreds of thousands of gallons of Creek water\, with NCA and partners taking water quality samples and data throughout. \nTo celebrate the start of TINA’s tenure\, join us Creekside at Kingsland Wildflowers this Earth Day: check out the tank\, look at some mussels and other Creek species\, and learn more about our water quality advocacy. Food and drinks will be provided!

DESCRIPTION:Join NCA and Sane Energy Project on this 5-mile bike tour\, showcasing the past and present of energy infrastructure along Newtown Creek. \n\n\n\n\nThis 5-mile bike tour will explore the past\, present\, and future of fossil fuel infrastructure along Newtown Creek. From the establishment of the world’s first kerosene refinery in 1854\, to the ongoing cleanup of the country’s largest terrestrial oil spill\, to the current environmental justice impacts stemming from National Grid’s 117 acre Liquified Natural Gas facility – Newtown Creek has a long and troubled history with fossil fuel production\, storage\, and pollution. DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance for a stewardship and planting event at one of our favorite waterfront parks in Greenpoint!\n\n\n\nNewtown Creek Alliance invites you to join us at Manhattan Ave Street End Park for a clean up + planting volunteer event! \nThis public space sits at the former site of the Vernon Avenue Bridge (replaced by the Pulaski in the late1940’s). In the years since\, it had been used as a parking lot and dumping site\, before being transformed into a park space with water access and a native wildflower meadow. \nThis event will include: \n\nLandscaping the existing vegetation\nTrash cleanup throughout the space\nRemoving specific plant aggressive species like bindweed\nPlanting of native wildflowers and grasses from our nursery!\n\n​​We will provide gloves\, tools\, safety vests\, and guidance on how to safely complete our tasks for the day. Before the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form (Adult form here and Minor form here). \nMeetup Location: We will be meeting at Manhattan Ave Street End Park in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn. \nPlan ahead for the event: Please wear weather-appropriate clothes\, sturdy shoes\, and bring your own water bottle and sunscreen if need be. We will have water and snacks on hand for volunteers. There are no bathrooms directly on site\, but local businesses may allow you to use their facilities. If you are unable to attend\, we ask you to please release your spot at least one day in advance.

NCA staff will be on hand to answer questions about the space\, the ecological benefits of green roofs\, and talk about our current activities around Newtown Creek!
