DESCRIPTION:Ages:  5-10 \nRegistration will open on October 23 2023 8:00 am \nSara Boccaccini Meadows is a British artist and illustrator who will be sharing a short presentation about her pattern and illustration work\, along with her new book\, Glow\, a family guide to the Night Sky. Glow invites young readers to explore stars\, planets\, and other celestial bodies and learn how to spot them. In this workshop we will be looking at patterns in space which we will use to design our own solar system using pencils and watercolor paints. \nMaterials Provided: Watercolor paper\, pencils\, watercolor paint\, brushes \n  \nAccessibility \n\nWe are a 5-minute walk off the Nassau G stop. Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.

It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skillsharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…there will be embroidery! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people to begin with\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend. We look forward to seeing you and your projects in October\, just in time for some cozy crafting.

DESCRIPTION:Ages:  5-10 \nThis week we will be learning about the tools that humans across time have used in order to learn about space.  What machines have we created to explore our universe?  STEM activity:  Pick a celestial body to explore and design a space probe for it.  What features does it have?  Is it big?  Is it small? \nMaterials Provided: Paper\, glue\, scissors\, recycled materials\, cardboard \n  \nAccessibility \n\nWe are a 5-minute walk off the Nassau G stop. Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a workshop with Stephanie Fox to learn how to harness the potential of the NYC Climate Dashboard\, a one-stop-shop webpage for all things climate and environmental information related in NYC. \nThe Dashboard aims to help New Yorkers hold the City accountable to its climate goals\, to mitigate the threats of climate crisis\, advance a just transition to renewable energy and a green economy\, and build a city that’s more resilient in the face of rising seas and temperatures. This training will give communities the knowledge they need to use this data in their community and advocacy work.   \n*** \nStephanie Fox is the Strategic Organizer for Environmental and Climate Justice at the Office of the New York City Comptroller Brad Lander\, where they work in the intersection of policy and public engagement on all issues climate. Prior to this\, they spent three years at the Office of the NYC Public Advocate\, where they led climate organizing for the office. They come to public service after nearly a decade in both climate advocacy and the private renewables industry where they lead customer engagement and business development projects across the country for companies like NRG and Alphabet.

SUMMARY:Creative Exercise and Movement (Greenpoint Library)
DESCRIPTION:Join our teaching artist\, Kwok Kay Choey\, for a nine week series of exercise and movement. Meeting every Friday from May 5th through June 30th. Participants will learn Simplified Tai Chi 24-movement\, “Eight Pieces of Brocade” a qigong exercise\, and Tai Chi for Arthritis and for Fall Prevention. \nMr. Choey will also teach about the history\, art\, and culture behind these Tai Chi movements that date back thousands of years. Participants will form relationships with class members through activities. The series will end on June 30th with a celebration and performance for family and friends. \n\n\nKwok Kay Choey has practiced Tai Chi/Qigong for more than 50 years. He often participates in tai chi seminars in Asia. He has instructor certification in Tai Chi for Arthritis & for Fall Prevention from the Dr. Paul Lam Tai Chi for Health Institute. He practices the Yang style\, tracing tai chi’s martial arts origins while emphasizing its health benefits. He has taught at the Queensborough Community College\, Brooklyn Botanic Garden\, Brooklyn Public Library\, Teamsters Local 237 Retirees\, and senior centers\, etc. \nTai Chi (Supreme Ultimate) is a form of Chinese martial arts. It originated in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Its slow movements emphasize that one’s Yin and Yang be brought to balance. Regular practice improves balance and blood circulation. It relaxes the mind and body\, and increases the chi (internal energy).
