The first Thursday of each month will be the basics of a sewing machines for those that want to learn about the machine itself. DESCRIPTION:Working with Repurposed Wood \nThis workshop\, taught by Ryan Frank\, will be a hands-on introduction to woodworking taught using repurposed wood found on the streets and waterfront of Brooklyn. Attendees will learn practical woodworking skills using hand tools\, working with wood pieces found in nature (i.e. driftwood) and repurposed after human use (i.e. discarded furniture). Each participant will be able to choose pieces of wood that speak to them and that will be used as a raw material to work with during the class. \nWorkshop participants will be taught about wood removal (cutting and chiseling)\, wood marking (carving and engraving) and wood stabilization (sanding\, glueing and finishing techniques) and will be tasked with creating a small wood object using these processes. They will also learn about the material makeup of wood and how its lifecycle from nature to man made objects relates to environmental science and climate change. During the course of the workshop participants will create a unique wood sculpture that they’ll be able to take with them at the end of the class. \nRyan Frank is a visual artist and woodworker based in Brooklyn\, NY. He’s had solo exhibitions at the Invisible Dog Art Center\, the Mattatuck Museum\, the Children’s Museum of the Arts\, the Lilac Preservation Project\, Tremaine Gallery and Icehouse Project Space. Ryan has attended residencies at La Napoule Art Foundation\, Jentel Foundation\, Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts\, Brooklyn Studios for Dance\, SIM Iceland and the Wassaic Project. In addition to his art and woodworking practice Ryan is an ardent runner and practitioner of Tai Chi.  \nThere is limited capacity. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the documentary film Gowanus Current followed by a talkback with the filmmakers Jamie Courville and Chris Reynolds. \nA century and a half of industrial waste and raw sewage has turned Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal into one of the nation’s most toxic bodies of water. Squeezed between some of the borough’s most expensive brownstone neighborhoods\, neglected public housing\, row houses and small manufacturing have long dotted its sludgy banks. However\, an ambitious EPA Superfund cleanup and a massive rezoning plan by the city hint that the real changes are just beginning. \nShot over the course of ten years\, Gowanus Current explores the textures of this unique part of the city and the passions and hopes of stakeholders fighting for its future. \nThis program is part of CBH’s Summer Screenings\, a series of documentary films about Brooklyn.

No experience necessary—all ages welcome\, but children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult. Materials provided while supplies last. \nGenspace is the world’s first community biology lab — a place where people of all backgrounds can learn\, create\, and grow with the life sciences. DESCRIPTION:Join performer Sarah Safford for a playreading and songwriting workshop. Come read a scene and listen to a song from a musical work in progress – EcoDisaster in the Hundred Acre Wood.   \nPatrons will participate in reading parts from a 15 minute segment of the play and listen to a song from that scene. This will be followed by a discussion and an opportunity to work collaboratively on writing a new version or ending of the scene and song\, or a different scene and song entirely. Recommended for adults and families with children age 5 +\, preferably familiar with Winnie the Pooh stories. \nSarah Safford is a lyricist\, playwright\, songwriter. She is an alum of the BMU Musical Theater Workshop and Mind the Gap\, New York Theater Workshop’s intergenerational playwriting group. She has contributed to a a wide variety of shows over a career of 50 years. Her recent musical theater project\, EcoDisaster in the Hundred Acre Wood has had readings at the Central Branch of Brooklyn Public Library and at the Old Stone House.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the legacy and future of New York City’s community gardens\, inspired by the short film The Amazing Garden\, produced and directed by Hiroko Tadano Neely and Deb Levine. The film tells the story of how\, thirty years ago\, a group of passionate neighbors transformed a derelict concrete lot on the Columbia Street waterfront into a lush\, thriving green space—a powerful example of grassroots urban renewal. Following the screening\, we’ll hear directly from three of the original gardeners—Launa Beuhler\, Mildred Bishop\, and Chris Curran—who helped bring The Amazing Garden to life. \nIn the second part of the evening\, a panel of experts will reflect on the broader community gardening movement in New York City including Isak Mendes\, Deputy Director of NYC Parks’ GreenThumb program\, Steven Thomson\, former President of the Brooklyn Queens Land Trust Board of Directors\, and Kwesi Joseph\, Urban Garden Specialist\, Harvest New York. \nTogether\, they’ll discuss the vital role community gardens have played in building neighborhoods since the 1970s and 80s\, and the contemporary challenges they face—from gentrification and zoning pressures to food justice and climate resilience. We’ll also explore the future of the movement as its founding generation ages\, and celebrate the enduring power of these spaces as hubs of nature\, creativity\, education\, and connection. \nThis program is part of CBH’s Summer Screenings\, a series of documentary films about Brooklyn.

Gain an understanding of the practical skills and knowledge essential for advancing green initiatives and contributing to a more sustainable future. These workshops provide insights on career strengths and preferences and how to tailor them to the growing green economy. \n  \nGreen Jobs: Opportunities and Pathways is a three-part series.  Attend all three sessions or choose one or two.  Registration encouraged for updates but not required.  Enjoy light snacks during this workshop. \n  \nAges 15-24 \n*** \nThu\, May 29\, 2025\, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Green Jobs: Urban Farming + Compost. During the first session of Green Jobs\, participants will learn about “green jobs” and their value to society. Participants will learn about the pressing issues caused by the climate crisis and examine ways that urban agriculture and composting address those issues. Participants will learn about the skillsets and day-to-day requirements of a job in composting or urban agriculture. This is an in-person workshop. \n  \nThu\, Jun 12 2025 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Green Jobs: Beekeeping + Conservation. During the second session\, participants will tour East New York Farms and see a honeybee hive. Participants will learn about the basics of honeybee hive structure and behavior and identify the different roles within a hive. Participants will also learn about the importance of pollinators and maintaining biodiversity and conceptualize the ways in which conservation can be carried out in urban environments. This is an in-person workshop. \n  \nFri\, Jun 27 2025 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Green Jobs: Career Paths: Jobs\, Classes and Majors.  During the third session of Green Jobs\, participants will be able to compare and assess the different paths that can be taken to secure a green job. This will be a hybrid program\, and participants can choose whether to attend in person or virtually. \n  \n  \n

We’ll explore backyard botanicals\, street trees\, and make a calming dandelion tea together to celebrate the end of the series. Teens\, please be prepared and know your allergies well! \n\n*** \n\nJournei Bimwala is a Bronx-based Clinical Herbalist\, Foraging Practitioner\, and educator whose work bridges African ancestral healing\, urban ecology\, and community wellness. She leads immersive programs that reconnect people—especially youth and families—to the natural world through plant identification\, herbal medicine-making\, and storytelling rooted in Congolese tradition. As founder of Each One Carry One and co-founder of the nonprofit One Heartbeat\, Journei advances food sovereignty\, environmental justice\, and access to green space in underserved communities.
