DESCRIPTION:Discover the amazing biodiversity of the East River as you get hands-on and up close with our marine life touch tank. Participants 14 years of age or older can learn how to use a seine net to humanely catch and release organisms in the river. Protective waders and all equipment will be provided. SUMMARY:Outdoor Sketchbooking (Brooklyn Bridge Park)
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to sketchbook? Are you interested in starting? Join Brooklyn Bridge Park educators and other like-minded people in a sketchbooking meet-up. Each time\, we will meet at a different location in the park to concentrate on different subjects and stretch our skills. Come to one event or come to all. It’s up to you. These are informal sessions with some instruction for those who are new to the practice as well as an open exchange of ideas\, techniques\, and materials. \nThis month we will be exploring the John Street section of the park and concentrating on architecture (the NYC skyline\, the Manhattan Bridge\, etc). Meeting point will be at the Manhattan Bridge viewing area\, near the salt marsh. \nRegistration required. We encourage you to bring your own\, favorite sketching materials\, but we will provide some for those who don’t have. This program is intended for adults\, although older teens are welcome as well. Advanced registration is encouraged but not required. There will be 25 spots available on a first-come-first-served basis.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make your own hand-bound books with educators\, as part of our Art Under the Bridge series. We will make collage covers using preserved leaves and then learn to bind our books with a coptic stitch that allows them to lay flat\, perfect for sketching or journaling. \nNo previous experience necessary. This workshop is best suited for ages 13 and up. The workshop requires some manual dexterity to thread and pull a sewing needle through cardboard. We will be using sharp tools\, and all participants will need to sign a legal waiver. The event is first-come\, first-serve with 25 spots available. Advanced registration is encouraged but not required.

This “bioblitz” event is being done by the Park’s horticulture team in partnership with Macaulay Honors College\, with the goal to observe and document the wide array of natural life living within the Park. Follow along to observe their findings on iNaturalist! \nInspired by this weekend of environmental monitoring\, stop by our Education Station to make your own quadrat\, which is a simple\, square measuring tool that is used by scientists to visually estimate and sample the plants and life under it. Observe your own findings and learn the importance of our local ecology.

Get up close to the stunning flowers that can be found on Pier 1: Count their petals and make your symmetrical floral bouquet with paint. \n  \nSpecies Spotlight: Crab: Tue 9/9\, 10 AM-12 PM & Wed 9/10\, 2 PM-4 PM \nGet up close and meet some of the crabs found in the East River through our touch tank. Learn about these crustaceans and the types of crabs that can be found on our shores. Look through a microscope at crab eggs and larvae (zoea)\, then make your own crab claw and test its ability to pick up objects.
