SUMMARY:Volunteer Landscaping and Cleanup at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir! \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \nPAISAJISMO VOLUNTARIO: EL EMBALSE DE RIDGEWOOD \nÚnase a NYC H2O y al Departamento de Parques de Nueva York para mantener la salud y la vitalidad del embalse de Ridgewood. DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteer gardeners who critically upkeep them as public green spaces. \nPirate’s Cove Garden in Red Hook\, Brooklyn is stewarded by dedicated gardeners who are excited to bring in new members into the garden! The gardeners aim to foster deep community connections through growing food and plants together. \nPirate’s Cove Garden is partnering with GreenThumb to redesign areas of the garden to make way for more growing spaces and building new raised garden beds. We’re seeking volunteers who want to lend a hand and learn basic carpentry and garden design skills. This is a great opportunity for those interested in joining a garden\, but may not be sure where to start! \nGloves and tools will be provided.
