SUMMARY:Tree Care And Pruning (PS 4 Paradise Garden)
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will learn the basic biology of pruning\, including stem structure\, vascular tissue\, and the CODIT (Compartmentalization of Decay In Trees) theory. They will explore the functions of pruning and the primary types of cuts\, including thinning\, reduction\, and heading cuts. The workshop will also cover healthy and unhealthy tree structures. Participants will be introduced to the standard three-cut pruning method and the basic tools for small-scale pruning\, including hand pruners\, hand saws\, and pole saws. Additionally\, the workshop will discuss best practices for tree care during the dormant winter months\, including pruning\, mulching\, removing invasive or problematic plants\, and inspecting for major defects or diseases. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all.
