SUMMARY:The Fairy Rings Gathering Series: WATER
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event on water with environmental organizer\, Earl Hatley! \n*** \nThe Fairy Rings: Gathering Series is coordinated by artist Jan Mun in partnership with Newtown Creek Alliance. The series engages visiting environmental experts in conversation with local stewards focused on Soil\, Water\, and Air\, in the context of Newtown Creek and its surrounding area. \nThis event will feature Earl Hatley\, a co-founder of LEAD Agency\, a grassroots organization in Oklahoma. LEAD’s original focus was the Tar Creek Superfund Site\, a 40 sq mile area of abandoned lead and zinc mines impacting ten tribes located in the area. Earl is an experienced environmental organizer who has helped tribal governments and other organizations develop water and air quality monitoring projects and conduct hazardous waste site investigations. Having worked on 18 Superfund Sites over 50 years\, in 2003\, Earl Hatley became the first Grand Riverkeeper with The Waterkeeper Alliance. Earl is an enrolled citizen of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi with Cherokee / Shawnee heritage. \nThe event will also include updates on local Water Quality and Superfund issues from NCA’s Executive Director Willis Elkins\, and a discussion pertaining to long term cleanup strategies and goals relevant to Earl’s experience and insights. Homemade mushroom soup will be served. The event is free to attend\, but space is limited. \nThe event series is organized by local artist Jan Mun\, in collaboration with Newtown Creek Alliance\, with funding support from Anonymous Was a Woman in partnership with The New York Foundation for the Arts and the Brooklyn Arts Fund Grant\, supported by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA).e
