SUMMARY:CBH Talk | Eric W. Sanderson on Brooklyn’s Lost and Future Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Earth Day\, join renowned landscape ecologist Eric W. Sanderson for a visual journey to pre-1609 Brooklyn with its landscape shaped by water\, wetlands\, and rich ecological systems\, followed by an exploration of the inspiring efforts to reclaim and reimagine Brooklyn’s waterfront today. \nPresented in partnership with Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and the NYC Greenways Coalition\, and moderated by The City’s climate reporter Samantha Maldonado\, Sanderson will draw on new research and visual renderings from his forthcoming book Before New York\, a five-borough sequel to his groundbreaking Mannahatta.  \nFocusing on four key Brooklyn sites—Wallabout Bay\, Coney Island\, Sunset Park\, and Red Hook – Sanderson will shine a spotlight on how the pre-colonial shoreline functioned\, and what that history can teach us now. He and Maldonado will explore how critical gaps in Brooklyn’s waterfront greenway\, all vulnerable coastal areas\, might be transformed through nature-based solutions. His research\, much of it sourced from the collections of the Center for Brooklyn History and the Brooklyn Historical Society\, offers a powerful framework for understanding how the borough’s ecological past can inform more resilient and imaginative waterfront planning today. \nThe program will also spotlight the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s advocacy to complete the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and its 2016 transformation of the Naval Cemetery Landscape in the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a thriving natural area\, pollinator meadow\, and public green space. Now nearly a decade old\, this project stands as a compelling model for reclaiming underused urban land and restoring ecological function along the greenway. BGI Executive Director Hunter Armstrong will make a brief introduction about the organization’s on-going work.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Sketchbooking (Brooklyn Bridge Park)
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to sketchbook? Are you interested in starting? Join Brooklyn Bridge Park educators and other like-minded people in a sketchbooking meet-up. Each time\, we will meet at a different location in the park to concentrate on different subjects and stretch our skills. Come to one event or come to all. It’s up to you. These are informal sessions with some instruction for those who are new to the practice as well as an open exchange of ideas\, techniques\, and materials. \nThis month we will be meeting at Pier 3 Central Lawn and concentrating on spring trees\, sketching their shapes before they leaf out completely. \nWe encourage you to bring your own\, favorite sketching materials\, but we will provide some for those who don’t have. This program is intended for adults\, although older teens are welcome as well. Advanced registration is encouraged but not required. There will be 25 spots available on a first-come-first-served basis. \nAccessibility note: This workshop will take place on Pier 3\, mostly on flat\, grass-covered ground\, but there are some paved areas. The closest bathrooms are on Pier 2 or at the Boathouse above the Pier 4 beach. Please reach out to education@bbp.nyc for any accessibility needs or questions.

SUMMARY:Bike Tour: Fossil Fuel History of Newtown Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join NCA and Sane Energy Project on this 5-mile bike tour\, showcasing the past and present of energy infrastructure along Newtown Creek. \n\n\n\n\nThis 5-mile bike tour will explore the past\, present\, and future of fossil fuel infrastructure along Newtown Creek. From the establishment of the world’s first kerosene refinery in 1854\, to the ongoing cleanup of the country’s largest terrestrial oil spill\, to the current environmental justice impacts stemming from National Grid’s 117 acre Liquified Natural Gas facility – Newtown Creek has a long and troubled history with fossil fuel production\, storage\, and pollution. We will see many of the historic and current operations along the Creek\, learn more about the hazards they present\, and discuss paths towards a cleaner energy future. \nWe encourage those joining to be fairly comfortable bicyclists – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining\, found here. \nPlease bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and weather-appropriate clothing. We will have limited staff in attendance to navigate and provide support. \nStart Location: Manhattan Ave Street End Park\, Manhattan Ave\, Brooklyn\, NY 11222 \nEnd Location: Cooper Park\, Brooklyn\, NY 11211
