SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop (Transmitter Park)
DESCRIPTION:Programming from the Germination Station: \nHosted by the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park please join us for a FREE Art Workshop \nInstructor: Amy Williams will again take us through the garden hand selecting native plant foliage for our outdoor printmaking workshop to create sun prints! \nNo experience necessary. You will take home a frameable print. \n*Registration required. \nHow it works… Have you ever seen a blue photograph? If you lived in the 1800s you would have. By placing objects on special paper and exposing the paper to sunlight\, early photographers created blue images\, called cyanotypes or sun prints. \nMeet at Greenpoint Avenue Entrance to the Park \n(Rain date: Sunday\, June 9\, 2024 ) \nAmy Williams is a photographer and mixed media artist living and working in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn. Trained in traditional photographic methods\, Williams continues to embrace these techniques despite the digital revolution of the photography world. Her photographs have been featured in the French art magazine Frog\, as well as the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. Williams has exhibited extensively and her work is in corporate and private collections in New York\, Washington D.C.\, Seattle\, Paris and Saudi Arabia. \nThe Germination Station is sponsored by the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park. Inspiration for this forum is inspired by the Park’s namesake and historic legacy of public radio broadcasting. Add to this the creation of a community for the expression of ideas and support for public green space. \nAmy Williams is a photographer and mixed media artist living and working in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn. Trained in traditional photographic methods\, Williams continues to embrace these techniques despite the digital revolution of the photography world. Her photographs have been featured in the French art magazine Frog\, as well as the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. SUMMARY:North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Public Paddle
DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. We welcome all our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn more about Greenpoint’s history\, environmental challenges and successes\, and residents. Get out on the water and see the neighborhood as you never have before! \nGot it? We can’t wait to see you! Blue skies\, full boats–can’t lose! \nNBCB sincerely thanks the Greenpoint Community Environment Fund and the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for financial support for our Public Paddle series. \n*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKAYAKING SCHEDULE\nQueens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center\, 57-28 2nd St\, Long Island City\, NY 11101\n\n\nJune 8th\, 11am-3pm (June 9 rain out day) \n\n\nJuly 13th\, 12-4pm (City of Water Day Edition) \n\n\nAug 17th\, 12-4pm (Aug 18 rain out day) \n\n\nSept 14th\, 12-4pm (Sept 15 rain out day) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n***\nCANOEING SCHEDULE\nManhattan Avenue Street End Park\, Greenpoint\, Brooklyn\n\n\nMay 25th\, 12-4pm (Opening Day / Memorial Day weekend) \n\n\nJune 22th\, 12-4pm (Juneteenth Paddle) >> CANCELED DUE TO HEAT \n\n\nJuly 13th\, 12-4pm (City of Water Day Edition) >> CANCELED DUE TO RAIN \n\nAug 10th\, 12-4pm

SUMMARY:Off the Rails: Bushwick Branch Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:A clean up event along the Bushwick Branch rail line \n*** \nJoin NCA\, NY & Atlantic Railway\, and Sims Metal for a volunteer cleanup along the rail lines near Newtown Creek. This series seeks to engage community members with environmental stewardship in often neglected industrial spaces\, while offering a glimpse into local train history and infrastructure through these unique sites. \nOn Sunday\, June 9th\, Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is hosting our second Off the Rails Series volunteer cleanup in East Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. This event will take place along the Bushwick Branch rail line by Morgan Avenue\, an active rail line used primarily for garbage collection and transfer from nearby facilities. Historically\, this line carried commuters between 1868 and 1924\, after which all passenger service was discontinued. Nearby stations included Bushwick Avenue Station by Montrose Avenue and Bushwick Place\, and South Side Railroad Crossing near Varick Avenue. \nThe nearby rail bridge is officially titled the Montrose Avenue Rail Bridge\, though it is sometimes called the English Kills Drawbridge (presently fixed in place). The steel bobtail swing bridge was designed as a temporary bridge in 1888 and rehabilitated between 1907 and 1927; it likely hasn’t been opened since the mid 1950’s. \nThis event will include: \n\nAn expansive trash pickup along the tracks of this active rail line (with no train activity during the cleanup). NY & Atlantic Railway will be providing support with their railroad crane car!\n\nWe will provide gloves\, tools\, safety vests\, water\, and guidance on how to safely complete our tasks for the day. Before the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form (Adult form here and Minor form here). \nMeetup Location: We will be meeting at the railroad crossing just north of Morgan Ave and Johnson Ave. \nPlan ahead for the event: Please wear weather-appropriate clothes\, sturdy close-toed shoes\, and bring your own water bottle and sunscreen if needed. There are no bathrooms on site. If you are unable to attend\, we ask you to please release your spot at least one day in advance. \n————— \nFor other volunteer opportunities with NCA\, visit our events page here: http://www.newtowncreekalliance.org/events/
