DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Esther and her puppet\, Bernie the Bee\, will assist kids in creating bee\, bat\, and butterfly puppets and will teach about how these creatures pollinate many of the fruits and vegetables we eat\, and how important they are to maintaining healthy ecosystems worldwide. \n\nFamilies are encouraged to bring recycled toilet paper and paper towel rolls for the base of the puppets\, and any other recycled/upcycled materials such as colored paper\, fabric scraps\, beads\, sequins\, pipe cleaners\, etc… Some materials will also be provided. SUMMARY:Sewer Tunnel Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:This 7-mile bike tour will follow the proposed route of the Department of Environmental Protection’s planned Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Storage Tunnel for Newtown Creek. Years in the making\, this massive\, multi-billion dollar infrastructure project will bring much needed relief and reduction to the repeated discharging of untreated sewage entering Newtown Creek during rain events. 2025 is a critical year for designing the tunnel and getting everything lined up to begin construction in the coming years (the project completion date is 2040). \nAlong the way\, we’ll pass pump houses\, sewer grates\, and CSO discharge points\, stopping frequently to talk about existing infrastructure and the DEP’s planned underground work. \nWe encourage those joining to be comfortable bicycling in the City – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic. We ask that attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining\, found here. Please bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and weather-appropriate clothing. This is an all ages event\, ideal for kids ages 4-12. \nTours of the Wyckoff House will be available starting at 12PM \nDress appropriately for the weather – Family Day takes place indoors and outdoors – and wear closed toed shoes if you plan on participating in any farm activities.
