SUMMARY:NuHart Site Cleanup Virtual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The NYSDEC is accepting written comments about the proposed plan\, for 30 days\, from March 25 through April 24\, 2024. \nThe major development is that excavation at the site has gone as deep as the current setup of the site will allow and there is still contamination of phthalates an estimated 4-5 feet below what has already been excavated. Along with the MRC\, DEC is proposing to allow a procedure called “In-Situ Solidification” or “ISS” which essentially mixes contaminated soil with concrete. The original decision had called for removal of all of the contaminants which the DEC has now deemed not feasible. Because of this change\, there has to be an amendment to the Record of Decision which will trigger a 30-day public comment period and a formal meeting during that time. \nWe have been informed that while public comment begins today\, “The ISS for the whole site is complete.”

SUMMARY:We're All Plastic People Now: Film Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Oceana  for a screening of Rory Fielding’s documentary\, We’re All Plastic People Now\, featuring Oceana board member Ted Danson. \nFollowing the film\, there will be a panel discussion with Gail Tierney (they/she/he)\, Oceana’s Field Representative for New York and a representative from Assemblymember Emily Gallagher’s office. \n  \nOceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one-quarter of the world’s wild fish catch. With more than 300 victories that stop overfishing\, habitat destruction\, oil and plastic pollution\, and the killing of threatened species like turtles\, whales\, and sharks\, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. A restored ocean means that 1 billion people can enjoy a healthy seafood meal every day\, forever. Together\, we can save the oceans and help feed the world.

SUMMARY:Canarsie Park Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Please join us along with CM Mercedes Narcisse’s office for a volunteer cleanup at Canarsie Park in Brooklyn! \nCanarsie Park connects to Canarsie Pier and overlooks Paerdegat Basin. Before the 1920s\, Paerdegat Basin was Paerdegat Creek\, a freshwater tidal creek connecting to Jamaica Bay. Canarsie Park is known for its recreation facilities\, but it is also home to a surprising number of diverse wildlife spanning multiple acquatic ecosystems due to Canarsie’s close proximity to the seashore and its lesser known wetland hiking trails. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Gloves\, garbage bags and pickers will be provided. \nPlease wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. 💧 \nThanks to Council Member Mercedes Narcisse for supporting our environmental stewardship programs.
