SUMMARY:Bonsai Beginner Workshop at Threes Brewing - Gowanus
DESCRIPTION:Beginner workshops are perfect for you to grab your friends\, grab a drink and come make tiny trees! We’re bringing the awesome art of bonsai out of the hedged in gardens and into the streets! Or at least into your favorite bars/breweries/pubs. Bonsai Bar is a night of fun you don’t want to miss. Learn the fundamental skills and techniques behind the art of bonsai while enjoying a night out with friends! Our teachers will introduce core concepts and guide your experience as you pot\, prune\, and design your very own bonsai tree! Our Guarantee: These tiny trees are so hardy we guarantee you can keep yours alive\, or we’ll replace it. \nThis workshop will be hosted at Threes Brewing – Gowanus. Threes Brewing is a Brooklyn-based brewery known for crafting approachable beers that balance simplicity and complexity\, with a focus on lagers\, hop-forward American ales and mixed culture beers. Creativity and respect for the craft of brewing are among our guiding principles. We take pride in introducing (or reintroducing) traditional styles to a new audience by applying a modern spin. We opened our Gowanus flagship in 2014; a non-traditional taproom and event space that houses our Brooklyn brewhouse\, tucked discreetly behind the main bar. Gowanus is the birthplace and heart of our operation\, also home to a beer shop\, music venue (Tiny Montgomery)\, and Ninth Street Espresso. \nUnder 21 policy: Please contact Threes Brewing – Gowanus for details regarding underage entry \nFor more about Bonsai Bar and what to expect at our classes\, visit our website at: https://bonsaibar.com/products/threes-brewing-gowanus

SUMMARY:CBH Talk | Green Gentrification and the Future of the BQE
DESCRIPTION:When Robert Moses built the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE)\, he demolished historic neighborhoods\, disrupted thriving communities\, and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents—disproportionately people of color and immigrants. Eight decades later\, sections of the BQE are crumbling\, prompting discussions about repair and reimagination. As officials and communities consider the future of this artery\, attention is turning to alternative ways to move goods and freight\, revitalize neighborhoods\, reconnect communities\, and address environmental harm all while avoiding the pitfalls of gentrification and displacement. \n“Green gentrification” refers to eco-friendly urban improvements that\, while beneficial\, inevitably increase property values and living costs\, pushing out long-term residents. Join the Center for Brooklyn History\, the Institute for Public Architecture\, and the Brooklyn Heights Association for an evening exploring how green gentrification can be considered – and avoided – as we look towards the future of the BQE. \nThe event begins with a screening of The Story of the BQE\, a documentary by architect Adam Paul Susaneck\, Founder of Segregation by Design\, produced by the Institute for Public Architecture. It is followed by a discussion with a panel of experts\, activists\, and stakeholders about the challenges of green gentrification and strategies to address them. Panelists include Dr. Frances Lucerna\, Co-Founder of El Puente and Founding Principal of the El Puente Academy for Peace; Michelle de la Uz\, Executive Director of Fifth Avenue Committee; Marc Norman\, Associate Dean of the Schack Institute of Real Estate at New York University; and Nilka Martell\, Founder/Director of Loving the Bronx. Leading the conversation is Tiffany-Ann Taylor\, Vice-President of Transportation at the Regional Plan Association. \nA light reception will follow the program.

SUMMARY:Resilient Parks – Design Opportunities for Bushwick Inlet Park
DESCRIPTION:FBIP 2025 Seminar Series “WHERE’S OUR PARK?” PAST→ PRESENT→ FUTURE \nFree registration required below. \nSea level rise\, storm surges and cloudburst events. These threats are design challenges but also present an opportunity for innovative and engaging park design. \nJoin Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park for a panel discussion with: \nStephen Whitehouse\, BIP 86 Kent Ave landscape designer\, urban planner\, principal\, Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners \nDr. Marcha Johnson\, landscape architect and ecological restorationist\, NYC Parks & Recreation \nBoth panelists have extensive experience in designing spaces within the public realm to help mitigate increasing threats from atmospheric changes affecting human and landscape interaction with water. With them we will explore their work\, including revisiting Stephen’s concept for BIP’s 86 Kent Ave\, and design philosophy in considering future waterfront park manifestations in the face of these challenges. \nStephen Whitehouse is a landscape architect and urban planner whose diverse pursuits share a concern for the environmental quality and social vitality of places. He formerly served as Chief of Planning for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation\, where he managed the expansion of the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows and launched the City’s Greenway system. Since co-founding Starr Whitehouse with Laura Starr\, he has worked with public and private clients to create dynamic urban districts and engaging landscapes that connect people to nature. \nRather than focusing on a single aspect of the work\, he’s always been most fascinated by the juncture points. “Natural systems\, patterns of settlement\, infrastructure – seeing all these come together to make a place is interesting to me\, not just as abstract concepts\,” he says\, “but in terms of seeing good results at the end.” He describes his role in terms of junctures as well. “I’m the translator\,” he says. “I serve as the mediator between the specialists and the public. I like communicating with people\, and seeing things shaped by the creative interactions of people and institutions.” \nMarcha Johnson\, PhD\, ASLA is a NYC landscape architect and ecological restorationist with about 40 years of specializing in shoreline designs with high habitat value in all 5 boroughs\, both as a professional and a pro-bono advisor/ volunteer. Marcha’s book\, Coastal Change\, Ocean Conservation and Resilient Communities\, co-edited with Amanda Bayley and published in December 2016 by Springer\, highlights ways to better understand and respect coastal landscapes\, design spaces affected by sea level rise and storms and live more wisely along the water. She serves on the Advisory Board for Riverkeeper\, and on the Technical Advisory Board Hudson River Park\, and has presented her waterfront designs\, ideas on conserving urban shorelines and themes from her book at local\, national and international conferences. An adjunct professor in City College of New York’s School of Architecture since 1990\, she teaches graduate courses in landscape architecture and sustainability.

SUMMARY:DSNY Residential Bins Info Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Residential Waste Containerization\nTo remove the mountains of black bags on New York City streets\, reclaim public space\, and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers\, DSNY has announced a plan to containerize all residential trash beginning fall 2024. \nThe new rules also apply to special-use buildings receiving DSNY collection – including City agencies\, nonprofits\, houses of worship\, and professional offices in residential buildings. \nInfo Sessions\nJoin a virtual info session to learn more about DSNY’s new containerization rules. \n\nThursday\, January 9 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, January 23 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, February 6 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, February 13 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, February 27 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, March 13 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, March 27 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, April 10 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, April 24 at 4:00 PM\n\nResidential Buildings with 1-9 Units\nBeginning November 12\, 2024\, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use bins\, 55 gallons or less\, with secure lids for trash set out. \nIf you already use a bin with a secure lid that is 55 gallons or less for trash set out\, you may continue to use it until June 2026. After that\, you will need to switch to the official NYC Bin. \nLearn more about NYC Bin requirements. \nOfficial NYC Bins\nThe NYC Bin is the next step in New York City’s plan to get black bags of garbage off the streets and make our city cleaner and safer for all New Yorkers. \nOn July 8\, 2024\, the City unveiled the NYC Bin\, the official trash bin for properties with 1-9 residential units. Separate NYC Bins are also available for purchase for recycling and composting\, though they are not required. \nThe NYC Bin is now available for purchase at a significantly lower price than similar bins at retail stores\, at www.bins.nyc or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS. \nNYC Bins are exclusively available for NYC property owners and building managers and will only be delivered to addresses within the five boroughs. \nThe NYC Bin was selected following the City’s release of an RFP in October 2023 to contract a vendor to produce official NYC Bins. In the RFP\, DSNY mandated that the vendor produce bins according to specifications including\, but not limited to: \n\nCost no more than $50 for the most common size\nAvailable in multiple sizes to accommodate different types of buildings.\nRat resistant\, easy to use by sanitation workers\, and compatible with mechanized collection trucks.\n\nDSNY will retrofit or replace hundreds of collection trucks\, adding mechanical tippers compatible with the new bins. This upgrade will speed up collection and minimize the possibility of spills that occur with manual collection. Two sanitation workers will be needed to operate the mechanism\, and this change will not affect DSNY workforce numbers. \nResidential Buildings with 10+ Units\nNYC is also advancing a plan to containerize trash in larger residential buildings. \nBuildings with 31 or more residential units will be required to use stationary\, on-street containers for their trash\, serviced by DSNY’s new automated side-loading garbage trucks. On-street containers will be assigned to a specific building\, solely for residents of that building. \nBuildings with 10 to 30 units will be able to choose between stationary on-street containers and smaller wheelie bins. \nThe first district with these containers will be Manhattan Community Board 9\, beginning Spring 2025\, with further expansion pending environmental review.

SUMMARY:Estuary Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy for an upcycled art workshop! \nEducators will guide you through collaging techniques that involve using upcycled materials and 3-dimensional layering. With the inspiration of the East River’s unique estuary habitat\, you will create a beautiful fish and estuary collage. As you craft\, learn a little bit about the health of our local waterways and the types of marine species that call the East River their home. \nThis activity is best suited for adults and children ages 8 and up. The art project will include cutting cardboard and using liquid glue. \nMaterials will be provided\, but we highly encourage you to bring your own colorful\, thin cardboard to have more options and ensure enough supplies for everyone (examples: cereal\, soda\, or snack boxes). \nThis event is free but first come\, first serve – registration required. https://brooklynbridgepark.org/event/art-under-the-bridge-estuary-collage-workshop/
