SUMMARY:Core and Flexibility Training with Dodge YMCA
DESCRIPTION:Join for our new Core and Flexibility Training class with Dodge YMCA to improve strength\, tone\, and flexibility. The goal of this class is to grow your confidence\, improve your connection with your body\, and push past your perceived limits. The class is a combination of core and flexibility exercises designed to build a strong foundation of movement capacity. Classes run on Sundays\, May 7-September 24\, 10:00 AM-11:00 AM at the Pier 6 Lawn. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own mats; an extremely limited number will be available to borrow from Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy staff. \nAdvanced registration is required. We are now opening registration by-the-month (opens at the start of the month for all classes that month) here. \nImportant: In addition to registration\, all fitness participants are required to fill out our fitness waiver here. Once completed\, your waiver is good for all Conservancy fitness classes of the 2023 season – you only need to fill it out once! Those under 18 years of age must have a parent/guardian complete the form on their behalf. \nConfirmation emails include a link to this waiver. It must be completed before you can participate in any of our fitness programming; individuals who have not completed a waiver will not be permitted to join. Individuals may only register for one spot per class; those who book multiple spots for one class will have their excess reservations removed. \nNote there is no class on Memorial Day weekend (May 28)\, July 4 weekend (July 2)\, or Labor Day weekend (September 3). \nFor event updates and announcements\, subscribe to our email and socials (Twitter\, Facebook\, Instagram). Also check our Alerts & Event Updates page. \nThe Conservancy’s free events and programs are made possible by hundreds of supporters like you. Please consider making a donation to support our work.

SUMMARY:Canarsie Park Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Please join us along with CM Mercedes Narcisse’s office for a volunteer cleanup at Canarsie Park in Brooklyn! \nCanarsie Park connects to Canarsie Pier and overlooks Paerdegat Basin. Before the 1920s\, Paerdegat Basin was Paerdegat Creek\, a freshwater tidal creek connecting to Jamaica Bay. Canarsie Park is known for its recreation facilities\, but it is also home to a surprising number of diverse wildlife spanning multiple acquatic ecosystems due to Canarsie’s close proximity to the seashore and its lesser known wetland hiking trails. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Gloves\, garbage bags and pickers will be provided. \nPlease wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. 💧 \nThanks to Council Member Mercedes Narcisse for supporting our environmental stewardship programs. \nLocation: Canarsie Park\, 314 Seaview Ave Brooklyn\, NY 11236

SUMMARY:Climate Week Webinar 5: An Island Without Water – Understanding the Inequities to Accessing the Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:It is rare for New Yorkers to understand they live in a city surrounded by water. So many are either unaware of the water or how to access it. This is an unfortunate reality for many young people and families where large new waterfront parks are not the norm. Join us for a conversation that discusses the current inequities in access to useable waterfronts\, how environmental justice communities carry the burden\, and the severe limitations of underdeveloped waterfronts that provide no community benefits and are at significant risk due to climate hazards. We will also explore the physical/mental/social implications of not being able to access these natural\, water-filled\, and inspiring spaces. \n  \nSPEAKERS John Doyle\, President\, City Island Rising Daniel Rannells\, Director of Programs and Operations\, Bronx River Alliance Ben Regas\, Community Organizer\, Waterfront Alliance Arif Ullah\, Executive Director; South Bronx Unite \n  \nMODERATOR Furhana Husani\, Director of Programs and Climate Initiatives\, Waterfront Alliance

SUMMARY:Riverkeeper's Whale Watching Voyage
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Riverkeeper’s efforts to make the Hudson River clean and healthy enough to support a diverse range of species – from oysters to whales – join us for our maiden whale watching voyage! In this four-hour cruise\, we’ll seek out some of the water’s most majestic creatures – and welcome them back! \nFor many years\, whales have been a rare sight in and around New York Harbor. But the tireless efforts put forth by Riverkeeper and our partner environmental groups are yielding signs of hope for the Hudson River Estuary and surrounding waters\, inspiring us to continue our work to heal the ecosystem and restore the abundance of life. Come experience the fruits of Riverkeeper’s efforts to protect the Hudson River and the ecosystems it serves! \nIlluminating educational commentary will be provided throughout the cruise by Riverkeeper’s habitat restoration team and experts from Gotham Whale\, New York City’s own whale research and advocacy organization. \n  \nOur maiden Whale Watching Voyage is made possible by Presenting Sponsor Longwave Financial\, a financial planning and investment firm for people who want to leave the world better than they found it. \n  \nLight refreshments will be served | Cash bar| Dress for comfort and weather | Boat is equipped with bathroom facilities | Rain or shine | BYOB (bring your own binoculars)
