They begin with theatrical games and activities to warm up their bodies\, voices and imaginations before opening their magical treasure trunk to reveal themed prop items for each kiddo. They use props to spark an exciting voyage to faraway lands\, meeting characters and overcoming obstacles all along the way in search of a hidden\, secret surprise. Kiddos will be giving their creative suggestions to help shape each storyline! Every class is a brand new adventure! \nA Rosie Day \nA Rosie Day’s innovative program is designed for parents/guardians and children aged 12 months and above. Classes are crafted to incorporate art\, sensory play\, technology\, and engineering into early math and science exploration\, following the Reggio Emilia approach. \nUpcycled Art (7/14) \nJoin A Rosie Day in minimizing waste by reusing household items! By utilizing a variety of recycled materials like cardboard\, plastic caps\, coffee tins\, cans\, paper towel rolls\, and more\, little artists are inspired to enhance their creations further. Not only will this initiative add depth and creativity to their artwork\, but the environment will also appreciate your sustainable efforts in reducing waste while promoting artistic innovation. \nPotion Play (8/4) \nDuring A Rosie Day’s Potion Play workshop\, children will interact with a range of measuring instruments to explore essential science and math concepts. Within a supportive and natural environment\, they will have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in discussions related to gravity\, scientific approaches\, and the enhancement of motor skills. The hands-on activity of Potion Play encourages creative thinking as kids create enchanting formulas and develop innovative storylines. This exercise not only boosts their critical thinking but also sharpens their problem-solving capabilities with success! \nAri\, The Sing-along Guy \nCome sing\, dance\, clap\, stomp\, jump and rock out with Ari The Sing-along Guy! Ari\, his guitar and his trusty yellow sweatband will lead you in songs you know\, and some you don’t\, but all of them are fun\, interactive\, and they really rock!

SUMMARY:South Slope Derby
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 South Slope Derby will take place on Saturday\, August 24 (12PM – 3PM)!\n17th Street between 5th Ave. and 6th Ave.\, Brooklyn \nOpen Source Gallery and KoKo NYC present our annual South Slope Derby\, a celebration of creativity and innovation! \nFor 17 years and counting the Annual South Slope Derby has thrilled Brooklyn every August\, becoming a beloved celebration of creativity and innovation. The Derby is the culmination of KoKo NYC’s summer programming and features gravity-powered soap box racers made from recycled materials and built by kids. During week-long workshops\, kids develop their building and engineering skills and express their natural ingenuity as they imagine and construct their sustainable cars. Together with our Teaching Artists and teen counselors\, kids learn to design the functional elements of the car\, such as steering and brakes\, troubleshooting and testing along the way. Throughout the build\, kids let their imaginations run wild – who’s to say a car can’t also be a butterfly? \nIn the South Slope Derby\, the kids put their creations to the test in a race down 17th Street in South Slope\, Brooklyn. They are cheered on by over 500 friends\, family\, and fans who travel from all over the city every year. Our panel of esteemed judges includes Council Members\, business owners\, community leaders\, and artists who evaluate the cars of over 100 kids on creativity\, design\, engineering\, and speed. In addition to the races there are raffles\, food vendors\, and fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nDERBY PARTICIPANTS: Please plan to arrive between 10AM and 11AM on the morning of August 24th to register.\nAnd please be sure to bring a helmet to wear for the race. \nCheck out this article in Brooklyn Magazine for memories of past derbies!
