SUMMARY:North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Public Paddle
DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. We welcome all our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn more about Greenpoint’s history\, environmental challenges and successes\, and residents. Get out on the water and see the neighborhood as you never have before! \nGot it? We can’t wait to see you! Blue skies\, full boats–can’t lose! \nNBCB sincerely thanks the Greenpoint Community Environment Fund and the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for financial support for our Public Paddle series. \n*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKAYAKING SCHEDULE\nQueens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center\, 57-28 2nd St\, Long Island City\, NY 11101\n\n\nJune 8th\, 11am-3pm (June 9 rain out day) \n\n\nJuly 13th\, 12-4pm (City of Water Day Edition) \n\n\nAug 17th\, 12-4pm (Aug 18 rain out day) \n\n\nSept 14th\, 12-4pm (Sept 15 rain out day) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n***\nCANOEING SCHEDULE\nManhattan Avenue Street End Park\, Greenpoint\, Brooklyn\n\n\nMay 25th\, 12-4pm (Opening Day / Memorial Day weekend) \n\n\nJune 22th\, 12-4pm (Juneteenth Paddle) >> CANCELED DUE TO HEAT \n\n\nJuly 13th\, 12-4pm (City of Water Day Edition) >> CANCELED DUE TO RAIN \n\nAug 10th\, 12-4pm

SUMMARY:Lighthouses of the United States - Paintings by Alfred La Banca Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Alfred La Banca Exhibit\nApril 28 – May 26\, 11 AM to 4 PM\nLighthouses of the United States \nAlfred La Banca was born in New York City in 1930. His family spent summers in New Dorp\, Staten Island\, and so began his love for coastal communities. He owned three IOR-rated sailboats and competed from Maine to Florida – including Newport\, Annapolis\, Fort Lauderdale and Key West. \nLighthouses were his passion. He called them the “Vanishing Castles of America”. Sadly\, these beautiful marine castles are disappearing\, often abandoned or destroyed. It was the hope of Alfred LaBanca to rekindle America’s passion with lighthouses through his beautiful watercolor paintings. \nHis work has been selected for Ritz Carlton Hotels\, York Wallpaper and many local art shows. \nHe was a member of the United States Airforce\, New York Yacht Club\, New York Athletic Club Yacht Club\, Corinthians\, Storm Trysail Club and the Noroton Yacht Club. \nThe La Banca Lighthouse Collection has over 250 paintings. We hope you enjoy viewing this wonderful collection and perhaps think of Al LaBanca when you see a lighthouse. \nFor information – 718 390 0040 info@lighthousemuseum.org

SUMMARY:Molière in The Park: The Miser
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world of biting absurdity and timeless truths with Molière in the Park’s The Miser\, re-imagined for today’s world. \nCast: Starring MaYaa Boateng\, Alana Raquel Bowers\, Francesca Faridany\, Lisa Gorlitsky\, Lakisha May\, Ismenia Mendes\, Daniel Pearce\, and Calvin Leon Smith! Translated and adapted by David Chambers. Directed by Lucie Tiberghien. Creative team: Producer: Garth Belcon \, Set: Marie Yokoyama \, Lights: Stoli Stolnack\, Costumes: Jessica Irvin\, Composer: Paul Brill \nBackground: Written in 1668 and presented upward of 2500 times over the next 350 years at the Comédie Française alone\, “The Miser” is Molière’s most successful play\, both in France and internationally. With this production\, MIP will once again reinvent Molière for today’s world while also keeping with our desire to stay true to the original French. We will both lean into non-traditional casting choices\, including casting women in male roles and swapping genders\, to highlight persistent biases\, deconstruct existing power dynamics\, and look into the barrel of existential paranoia and greed. Additionally\, with the permission of David Chambers\, certain passages will be revised employing direct translation from the original French. \nThe Story: Harpagon\, a newly widowed geezer\, consumed by fear of losing his wealth\, will do anything to save his fortune. When he announces that he has found love again and is ready to wed\, the ultimate rebellion begins. Through a series of outlandish events and misunderstandings\, the entire household is forced to face the true cost of Harpagon’s folly before they see the light again. \nA note from Board President\, Kaliswa Brewster: We are thrilled to be able to bring our third free production to Brooklyn’s backyard\, Prospect Park. This year\, we are aiming to reach 7\,000 individuals\, for many of whom\, experiencing theater will be a first. In this time of division and unrest\, we believe that live theater can unite and heal. Molière’s plays written in France 350 years ago may seem like unlikely vehicles to look at the social and political issues of our times but surprisingly\, they always question\, confront\, provoke and demand that we pay attention. Rather than preach\, they hold up a mirror and ask us to look\, and laugh. Brooklyn is a microcosm of The United States and of the global world\, it is home to every type of person\, from every culture and every background. MIP’s goal is to break through the silos and foster community across all of our micro groups. What does it look like to create a theater space where everyone feels welcome and at home? We believe it looks like Molière in the Park- where people from all walks of life are sitting together shoulder to shoulder\, breathing the same air\, laughing and reflecting\, together. \nProduced by Molière in the Park\, in partnership with LeFrak Center at Lakeside\, Prospect Park Alliance and in collaboration with The Brooklyn Public Library.
