SUMMARY:Extend Your Growing Season with Low Tunnels (Ponderosa Garden)
DESCRIPTION:Urban gardening doesn’t have to stop when temperatures drop! This workshop will teach you how to build low tunnels to protect cold-hardy crops and extend your growing season in small spaces like community plots\, backyards\, and rooftops. Learn which winter crops thrive in NYC’s climate and how to choose and use materials that fit tight urban gardens. Gain practical\, space-efficient skills to construct sturdy low tunnels so you can keep growing fresh produce through the winter. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public. \nLocation: Ponderosa Garden\, 660 East 105th Street\, Brooklyn. Directions to this location \nCost: Free \nRegistration: Register Here \nEvent Organizer: GreenThumb\, Ponderosa Garden \nContact Email: fabiola.caceres@parks.nyc.gov

SUMMARY:Forest in Flux: Climate Clues from the Temperate Woods (Brower Park Library)
DESCRIPTION:Step into the temperate forest and discover how animals rely on nature’s seasonal signals to survive—and how climate change is throwing off the timing. Through hands-on exploration and storytelling\, we’ll uncover the hidden connections between climate\, trees\, and the creatures who call the forest home. Just like the plants and animals we’ll observe\, we shall adapt to the weather as needed. \nKate (she/her) is an early childhood educator and a planetarium pilot at the American Museum of Natural History where she teaches children everything from the wonders of our very large universe to the joy found in the smallest of insects. Her favorite creature is her cat\, Vera—who is made of stardust and judgment.

SUMMARY:In conversation with Eileen Flanagan\, author/activist/speaker
DESCRIPTION:*About the event:* \nAs heat waves\, wildfires\, storms\, and floods become ever more deadly\, it has become apparent that we have a shared stake in protecting the air\, water\, and climate–for ourselves and for future generations. There is a groundswell of action as citizens of all ages struggle to address the problem–some commit civil disobedience or move money out of fossil fuels. \nIn “Common Ground\,” veteran Quaker activist\, facilitator\, and teacher Eileen Flanagan takes us on a personal journey through her environmental direct-action experiences as well as her relationships with community elders to understand how we can form coalitions to actually make a difference. Flanagan shows that “the illusion of separation” is at the root of interlocking environmental crises and that it’s often politicians and corporations who benefit by keeping the rest of us divided across lines of race\, class\, religion\, and generation. But we are at a new moment in human history. \nAmid the chaos and conflict of our times\, people are stretching their hands across old divides and are ready to take action. In Common Ground\, Flanagan argues that more than technology or even elections\, acting in solidarity with all life is humanity’s best hope for survival. \n*Eileen Flanagan* brings a forty-year commitment to justice to her speaking\, writing\, and climate leadership. From a working-class Irish American family\, she has confronted corporate CEOs\, prayed in their lobbies\, and been arrested alongside Indigenous water protectors\, Black preachers\, and fellow Quakers. Nationally known for helping people to make their activism more effective and spiritually-grounded\, she shepherded a scrappy group of Quakers to pressure a $4 billion-a-year bank to stop financing mountaintop removal coal mining. She earned a BA from Duke and an MA from Yale as a first-generation college-student\, focusing on resistance to colonialism\, which she taught on the college level. The Dalai Lama endorsed her award-winning book The Wisdom to Know the Difference\, and some of the best-known climate activists in the world endorsed her memoir Renewable. She lives with her husband on Lenape land in Philadelphia. \n— \nThis event is perfect for:\n– individuals looking to make a difference in their local community\n– groups looking for a venue or a stand-in for a monthly gathering\n– folks searching for a place in which to step back\, dream big\, and vision together\n– people seeking to learn more about what works in the climate movement and where our best efforts for the future exist\n– teams that want to meet up socially / irl and enjoy some food or a drink together after a thought-provoking discussion
