SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at Garden of Life
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. Garden of Life is a serene\, green oasis in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn cared for by a few long-standing community members. The garden features 16 food-producing plots\, wheelchair-accessible pathways\, and dedicated gathering spaces. \nDuring this volunteer day\, participants will engage in meaningful\, hands-on projects\, such as building two (2) types of plant-supporting trellises and adding soil to vegetable plots. This is a great opportunity for those interested in getting involved with a community garden! Bring water\, snacks\, and comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving\, bending\, and squatting for long periods. \nGroups of 5 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. He has worked for several name artists as fabricator\, assistant\, for Mathew Barney\, Red Grooms\, Tom Otterness among others. His work for the Wildlife Conservation Society as an exhibit specialist has had a lasting impact on the way that his work is constructed as well as how industrial art practices impact the environment. His work is iterative nature with an emphasis on sustainability. He is an interdisciplinary artist\, molding\, casting\, painting combining and overlapping medium’s themes and mediums. His most recent work is writing\, he is focusing on nonlinear poetry that is beat like and nostalgic. Work in progress is a romance story of a bee and a buttercup. \nJim Osman was born in New York City. He received a BA & MFA from Queens College. He has had solo exhibitions at McKenzie Fine Art\, Robichon Gallery\, Lesley Heller Workspace\, Long Island University and Dartmouth College. His work has been included in group shows at the Brooklyn Museum\, Equity Gallery and University of Texas at San Antonio.  He has received grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council\, Parsons School of Design and a NYFA Artist Fellowship in Craft/Sculpture. He became a member of the National Academy in 2019.Mr. Osman taught courses in three-dimensional design and sculpture at Parsons School of Design for 22 years. He lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York.

Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.

SUMMARY:A Film: History of The Narrows Botanical Gardens (Bay Ridge Library)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the 2nd floor meeting room to learn about the Jewel of Bay Ridge: the Narrows Botanical Gardens! \nWe will be showing a film about the history of the Narrows Botanical Gardens with a Q&A afterwards. Light refreshments will be served. \nPlease register for the event on the Brooklyn Library webpage. \n***\nNBG was established in 1995 by a small group of local residents who organized a neighborhood clean-up of 4.5 acres of abandoned parkland between the Belt Parkway and Shore Road. Today\, it’s one of NYC’s most enduring volunteer gardening initiatives\, with 17 distinct and beautiful gardens and exhibits. NBG is a grassroots effort by volunteers who take pride in stewarding the land. NBG aims to be a place of peace\, and connection to nature for the public. We also provide sanctuary for native turtles and birds\, and inform the public about gardening for wildlife.

SUMMARY:Fiber Arts and Sewing Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenpoint Library for a sewing and fiber arts get together on the second Tuesday of each month. \nFor those with experience\, the library has sewing machines available – sign up for a sewing machine by emailing Molloy Rogers. If you own a sewing machine\, feel free to bring it with you to the library. It is suggested that you have some experience and bring a project to work on\, although skillsharing is encouraged! The library has sewing and cutting tools to share. \nIf sewing is not your specialty\, you may still join and work on a fiber arts craft project of your choice…embroidery\, needlepoint\, etc! \nThe art circle is capped at 15 people\, so please only register if you know you will be able to attend.
