DESCRIPTION:Residential Waste Containerization\nTo remove the mountains of black bags on New York City streets\, reclaim public space\, and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers\, DSNY has announced a plan to containerize all residential trash beginning fall 2024. \nThe new rules also apply to special-use buildings receiving DSNY collection – including City agencies\, nonprofits\, houses of worship\, and professional offices in residential buildings. \nInfo Sessions\nJoin a virtual info session to learn more about DSNY’s new containerization rules. \n\nThursday\, January 9 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, January 23 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, February 6 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, February 13 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, February 27 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, March 13 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, March 27 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, April 10 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, April 24 at 4:00 PM\n\nResidential Buildings with 1-9 Units\nBeginning November 12\, 2024\, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use bins\, 55 gallons or less\, with secure lids for trash set out. \nIf you already use a bin with a secure lid that is 55 gallons or less for trash set out\, you may continue to use it until June 2026. After that\, you will need to switch to the official NYC Bin. \nLearn more about NYC Bin requirements. \nOfficial NYC Bins\nThe NYC Bin is the next step in New York City’s plan to get black bags of garbage off the streets and make our city cleaner and safer for all New Yorkers. \nOn July 8\, 2024\, the City unveiled the NYC Bin\, the official trash bin for properties with 1-9 residential units. Separate NYC Bins are also available for purchase for recycling and composting\, though they are not required. \nThe NYC Bin is now available for purchase at a significantly lower price than similar bins at retail stores\, at www.bins.nyc or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS. \nNYC Bins are exclusively available for NYC property owners and building managers and will only be delivered to addresses within the five boroughs. \nThe NYC Bin was selected following the City’s release of an RFP in October 2023 to contract a vendor to produce official NYC Bins. In the RFP\, DSNY mandated that the vendor produce bins according to specifications including\, but not limited to: \n\nCost no more than $50 for the most common size\nAvailable in multiple sizes to accommodate different types of buildings.\nRat resistant\, easy to use by sanitation workers\, and compatible with mechanized collection trucks.\n\nDSNY will retrofit or replace hundreds of collection trucks\, adding mechanical tippers compatible with the new bins. This upgrade will speed up collection and minimize the possibility of spills that occur with manual collection. Two sanitation workers will be needed to operate the mechanism\, and this change will not affect DSNY workforce numbers. \nResidential Buildings with 10+ Units\nNYC is also advancing a plan to containerize trash in larger residential buildings. \nBuildings with 31 or more residential units will be required to use stationary\, on-street containers for their trash\, serviced by DSNY’s new automated side-loading garbage trucks. On-street containers will be assigned to a specific building\, solely for residents of that building. \nBuildings with 10 to 30 units will be able to choose between stationary on-street containers and smaller wheelie bins. \nThe first district with these containers will be Manhattan Community Board 9\, beginning Spring 2025\, with further expansion pending environmental review.

SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Winners Announced
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nAre you ready for this year’s NASA TechRise Student challenge? From researching Earth’s environment to designing experiments for space exploration\, schools are invited to join NASA in its mission to inspire the world through discovery. If you are in 6th to 12th grade at a U.S. public\, private\, or charter school – including those in U.S. territories – your challenge is to team up with your schoolmates and develop a science or technology experiment idea for this year’s NASA TechRise flight vehicle – the high-altitude balloon! \nThe High-Altitude Balloon will offer approximately four to eight hours of flight time at approximately 70\,000 to 95\,000 feet and exposure to Earth’s atmosphere\, high-altitude radiation\, and perspective views of our planet. \nA total of 60 winning teams will be selected to build their proposed experiment. The Lake and Lullwater are home to many plants and animals. Help us to test the water quality and investigate pond samples that are filled with living organisms. \nAnimal Encounter\, 2–3 pm: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. This program starts promptly at 2 pm. \nWinter Wilderness Walk\, 3–4 pm: Curious about animal tracks in the snow\, how trees survive without leaves\, or how bugs stay warm? Join an Alliance Naturalist for a tour of how plants and animals live in the winter months. This program leaves from the Audubon Center promptly at 3 pm.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: George Washington Carver Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \nFounded in 1996 with the help of the neighboring school\, I.S. 318 (its former namesake)\, this garden has ample space to grow produce\, flora\, start seeds\, care for chickens\, and host community programs. George Washington Carver Community Garden (est. 2023) currently has over twenty-two (22) raised beds for growing food\, multiple bee hives\, compost systems\, and vast landscape planting opportunities. As a recipient of support from NYC Parks GreenThumb\, the garden group must collectively fulfill certain requirements\, including\, but not limited to\, hosting Open Hours (April 1-Oct 31)\, maintaining the garden\, having a clear path to membership for all\, and hosting two free community events. \nGreenThumb is hosting a public Garden Interest Meeting and Volunteer Day with intent to triple the garden group’s membership\, strengthen community partnerships\, and establish a maintenance plan to support the garden’s future success. Come learn about grassroots community gardening and lend a hand! Bring water\, snacks\, and comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving\, bending\, and squatting for long periods. \nGroups of 5 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. DESCRIPTION:These outings will start at The Audubon Center at the Boathouse. \nLeader: A member of the Brooklyn Bird Club \nWhether you’re just starting out or have already joined the birding ranks\, this introductory bird outing is for you. Join a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn the basics of birding and search for the dozens of species that visit Prospect Park through all seasons. \nAll levels and ages are welcome. No registration necessary. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease bring binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to loan. \nRoute Description: This outing is at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to observe birds. A different route through the park may be taken each week. There may be steps\, slight inclines\, and grass and dirt paths with exposed roots. We will cover approximately 1.5-2 miles.

DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn’s favorite free theater\, Molière in the Park is back with a staged reading of Le’Asha Julius’ new play The Regulars + Molière’s The Ludicrous Ladies! \nAbout the Play: \n“Pairing The Regulars\, a short tragedy in verse by rapper\, actor\, and playwright Le’Asha Julius with The Ludicrous Ladies\, a one act comedy in prose by Molière might appear at first as an exercise in contrast. New versus old\, serious versus farcical\, political versus domestic… but in content and in form the plays\, of course\, are neither fully one nor the other. More importantly\, despite the time and space that separates their authors\, both plays center two impassioned women with complex desires. Desires they fight for\, and that may or may not be born exclusively out of the limitations imposed on them by their place in the world. Will this pairing open up an angle of reflection on women’s struggles and how they’ve evolved or persisted? SUMMARY:Center for Brooklyn History Talk: Atlantic Avenue End-to-End
DESCRIPTION:This program is offered in partnership with the Municipal Art Society (MAS)\, as part of its Enduring Culture Initiative\n\nAtlantic Avenue is one of the most critical corridors in our city. The sole east-west truck route through Brooklyn\, it also bifurcates Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill\, Downtown Brooklyn and Prospect Heights\, and Crown Heights from Bedford Stuyvesant before transitioning into Queens. The corridor has been home to layers of communities\, yet across the stretch of these diverse neighborhoods\, the course of development and the investment of resources has not been equal. \nNow the City is looking to transform Atlantic Avenue. The Atlantic Avenue Mixed Use Plan (AAMUP) is a community-centered rezoning proposal: a mixed-use framework intended to support affordable housing\, new jobs\, and public space investment. With city officials and residents contemplating Atlantic Avenue’s future\, a number of critical questions arise. How do we practice preservation in ways that support long-time neighborhood businesses\, community character\, and the many priceless elements that make neighborhoods along the corridor familiar and beloved? What methods will help bolster community resiliency? How do we ensure security and protection for current residents\, taking into account all that we know about the dynamics of gentrification and displacement? \nJoin the Center for Brooklyn History and the Municipal Art Society of New York for a conversation with interdisciplinary practitioners who are working across the spectrum of Atlantic Avenue communities to preserve culture and history in the face of change.
