DESCRIPTION:Join us for Open Hours at Kingsland Wildflowers — an opportunity for the public to learn about the green roofs\, the native plants present\, and the Newtown Creek while enjoying the golden hour from our scenic wildflower meadows. Open hours are free and open to the public and will take place every Friday from April 18 to June 27\, 2025\, weather-permitting. \nFor the 2025 Open Hours season\, we are excited to also be opening our Newtown Native Nursery\, allowing visitors to explore (and purchase) native plants that we grow on site\, and can be a great addition for any greenspace you may have or be involved in! \nThis is a family friendly event\, kindly keep in mind that we use our green roofs as an educational resource\, we prefer that furry friends stay at home. NCA staff will be on hand to answer questions about the space\, the ecological benefits of green roofs\, and talk about our current activities around Newtown Creek! We will have drinks and light refreshments on hand for guests to enjoy. \nMusic on select Fridays \nMay 13th – Cal Fish \nJune 16th – Liver \nJune 27th – Maidenhead +DJ Chase Coppins \nPlease note that not all roofs are ADA compliant\, our paths have a 34” width and can have some uneven surfaces including bluestone\, small gravel\, and soil. Puppets like Oliver Owl\, Bernie the Bee\, and Sustainable Sammy teach about the importance of trees to our ecosystems\, how bees (and bats) pollinate many foods we eat\, and how we can protect our oceans from plastics and contamination. Kids and their caregivers will sing and dance while learning about sustainability! With Esther and her puppets\, a daunting subject like climate change is accessible and empowering. \n\nThis program is for children ages birth to 7 and their caregivers. \n\nThis program is part of the 2025 Early Childhood Symposium on Climate Justice in Early Childhood. Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.
