SUMMARY:Battery Storage and Energy Storage Systems: How They Work\, How We Benefit (Central Library)
DESCRIPTION:Why do we need BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems)? \nFacing the climate crisis requires a rapid transition to renewables. But what happens when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow? Battery storage technology is an essential piece of the clean energy puzzle. This program demystifies a technology that’s already working here in Brooklyn and around the world. \nThis event is part of 350Brooklyn’s Facing the Future series of events highlighting problems and solutions in our home borough. \nSpeakers: \nMichael Menser\, Professor of Philosophy\, Urban Sustainability Studies and Caribbean Studies at Brooklyn College and Earth and Environmental Sciences at The Graduate Center\, CUNY. Mike co-directs the NYC Climate Justice Hub\, a partnership between CUNY and the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance. \nBill Oberkehr\, Program Manager\, Clean Energy Siting\, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Bill serves on the governor’s InterAgency Fire Safety Working Group and works on solar and energy storage codes. \nClaudia Villar-Leeman\, Senior Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs\, New York Battery Storage and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST). She works to advance policy\, programs\, permitting and legislation to enable safe installation of battery storage system — technology that is essential to making the power grid more efficient\, affordable\, and reliable\, particularly as we shift away from fossil fuels.

SUMMARY:Art Under the Bridge: Rubber Stamp It! Low-Relief Printing on Fabric
DESCRIPTION:Join educators from Brooklyn Bridge Park in carving stamps and printing with them on a tote bag\, as part of our Art Under the Bridge series. Participants will create a design\, learn how to transfer it to the stamp material\, safely use lino cutters\, and then print using fabric ink. \nThis is a fun art form that you can then easily do at home. All materials will be provided\, but you can also bring your own item to print on as you please. Just make sure that whatever you bring is light-colored as we will be printing with black ink. \nNo previous experience necessary. This workshop is best suited for ages 13 and up. We will be using sharp cutting tools and all participants will need to sign a legal waiver when they arrive. The event is first-come\, first-serve with 25 spots available. Advanced registration is encouraged but not required.
