DESCRIPTION:For nearly 50 years\, Bargemusic has been committed to attracting local audiences and enhancing the cultural life of New York by offering performances of chamber music in an intimate setting – the type of setting in which chamber music is meant to be heard.\n\nBargemusic concerts are 1 to 1.5 hours\, with no intermission. Doors open 20 minutes before the concert (no tickets\, no reservations). No food or drink is permitted inside the Boathouse\, and no photo\, video\, or audio recording is allowed without permission. SUMMARY:CBH Talk | The Sparrow in the Archive: A Small Brooklyn Bird with a Global Story
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-nineteenth century\, the house sparrow was intentionally introduced to cities across the colonial world. Today this small brown bird is often dismissed as a pest—but its history tells a much larger story about migration\, empire\, and the reshaping of urban environments. Brooklyn played a surprising role in that story: one of the earliest successful introductions of the species in the Americas took place here\, helping the sparrow become one of the most widespread birds on the continent. \nIn this talk\, Argentine-Australian artist and researcher Dr. Fernando do Campo traces the origins of Brooklyn’s sparrows and the myths that surround their arrival. Drawing on archival materials from the Brooklyn Public Library\, the Brooklyn Museum\, and Green-Wood Cemetery\, he revisits the nineteenth-century effort to introduce the birds\, an episode that included Brooklynites caring for dozens of sparrows during the winter of 1856 before releasing them the following spring. \nBlending art\, history\, and environmental storytelling\, do Campo reflects on how contemporary artists can engage archives to uncover overlooked narratives. Through his own artworks and research\, he explores how the sparrow’s global journey—from England to cities across the world—offers a new way to think about migration\, belonging\, and the intertwined histories of humans and animals in urban life. Following his presentation\, do Campo will be in conversation with artist Umber Majeed.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Orientations are a great way to learn about available opportunities at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Volunteers clean up tons of trash\, plant trees\, and remove invasive plant species. \nOver 14 years\, Sweep volunteers have completed 1\,463 projects and removed 396 tons of debris\, including 2\,352 tires\, and planted or maintained thousands of trees and shrubs. Once-neglected areas have gained year-round stewards\, and rivers and creeks are better for it. \nVolunteers must register in advance. DESCRIPTION:These outings will start at The Audubon Center at the Boathouse. \nLeader: A member of the Brooklyn Bird Club \nWhether you’re just starting out or have already joined the birding ranks\, this introductory bird outing is for you. Join a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn the basics of birding and search for the dozens of species that visit Prospect Park through all seasons. \nAll levels and ages are welcome. No registration necessary. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease bring binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to loan. \nRoute Description: This outing is at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to observe birds. A different route through the park may be taken each week. There may be steps\, slight inclines\, and grass and dirt paths with exposed roots. We will cover approximately 1.5-2 miles.
