Join a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn the basics of birding and search for the dozens of species that visit Prospect Park through all seasons. \nAll levels and ages are welcome. No registration necessary. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease bring binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to loan. \nRoute Description: This outing is at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to observe birds. A different route through the park may be taken each week. There may be steps\, slight inclines\, and grass and dirt paths with exposed roots. We will cover approximately 1.5-2 miles.

DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. DESCRIPTION:Ages:  5-10 \nRegistration will open on October 09 2023 8:00 am \nPlanetary rings and moons aren’t just fancy celestial accessories but active\, dynamic structures that undergo daily temperature shifts\, seasons\, and even give birth to moons! This week we’ll be learning about the planets in our solar system that have their own rings and satellites. \nMaterials Provided: Paper\, glue\, scissors\, recycled materials\, cardboard\, markers \n  \nAccessibility \n\nWe are a 5-minute walk off the Nassau G stop. Our building entry\, elevator\, and bathroom are all ADA compliant.\nFor this workshop we will be in Eco Lab 1\, this room is brightly lit from a variety of fixtures and natural lighting.  Temperature varies.\nBeing a public space there is often overlapping noise within the building.  This workshop is geared towards kids which might include varying levels of sound depending on excitement or interest of group.  To reduce sensory input feel free to bring your own ear plugs or ask us if you’d like to borrow a sound filtering device.\nGrown-ups are encouraged to stay in the space to provide additional support to their child.  This may include help with motor skills or emotional support.

Librarians from Brooklyn Public Library Adams Street location lead for an exciting and engaging storytime session\, along with singing and rhymes. Each month they select a book to pair with the Education Center’s monthly nature theme. After\, stay to check out all the animals and activities in the room – open hours on Thursdays are currently 3:00-5:00pm! Storytime is typically about a half hour long. Walk-ups only; we do our utmost to accommodate as many walk-ups as space allows. The Environmental Education Center is still encouraging all visitors to wear a mask to help protect others.

The college truly embodies NCA’s mission to Reveal\, Restore\, and Revitalize Newtown Creek which is why we are honoring them with all three awards this year. \nThis year we are very excited to be hosting our Tidal Toast on the Creek itself. SUMMARY:Fall Plant ID Walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalist Caitlin Lynch to observe and learn about plants at the Ridgewood Reservoir. \n\nAbout this event\nDuring this (approx) 1 hour walk\, Caitlin will share with participants common and scientific plant names\, how to identify certain species\, their characteristics\, their family relationships\, their uses (ecological and social) and some botanic terms. The tour will include weedy plants\, herbaceous plants\, flowering plants\, trees\, grasses and common invasives. Participants are encouraged to contribute knowledge\, ask questions and store their observations in their plant ID app of choice. The tour route will include the West Causeway and other park areas. \nAppropriate for all ages and all levels. Event is rain or shine but may be rescheduled in the case of storm conditions. \nCaitlin Lynch is an urban naturalist\, environmental scientist and plant aficionado based in Brooklyn. She has worked with the NYC Parks Department\, Natural Areas Conservancy\, and NYC H20 on a myriad of restoration\, stewardship\, and ecological surveying projects throughout the city. \nNew York City is home to over 1\,300 native plants and many other naturalized species that provide ecosystem services including specialized habitat\, food\, and a host of medical and other uses. The grounds of Ridgewood Reservoir\, located in Highland Park\, have been maintained and managed to restore many of the native plant species to this area. The late summer/early fall is an ideal time for plant ID in the Northeast with its abundance of late blooming flowers\, seed/fruit formations\, and early leaf color changes.

Johnson State Park \n90 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn\, New York \nCross streets – N 8th and Kent Ave \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: \n\nRegistration is highly recommended for all participants to secure your space in the program. Please reserve one ticket per individual.\nIf you are more than 10 minutes late your ticket may be released to walk up participants.\nIf the program is sold out\, but you still wish to attend\, we encourage you to walk up and see if space is available.\nIn the case of inclement weather\, the program may be rescheduled or canceled.
